After two grueling fights against Georges St-Pierre and Johny Hendricks in a row, top welterweight Carlos Condit is taking a little time off to work on his wrestling game, but he'd like to get back into the cage late this summer or early in the fall.
"I had a couple of fights, back to back," Condit said in an interview with MMAJunkie.com. "So honestly, I'm probably just taking the summer doing some traveling and some training – obviously, a big aspect of my game I need to work on. My last two fights were basically lost due to the wrestling. So I'm really focusing on that before I get out there again."
When he gets back in, there are a number of options at 170 lbs., but Condit's interested in whatever big fights are there for him, and perhaps the biggest would be a rematch with Nick Diaz.
"I want to be in good fights with a lot of hype and a lot of buzz, and a rematch with Diaz and myself would interest a lot of folks," he said. "I guess we're just going to have to see how the welterweight picture shakes up here in the next couple of events, and maybe then we'll have a better idea. I definitely think I have another title run in me. I'm looking at making the next year or two some of my best fights. I'm trying to cement my legacy, and we'll see where I am after that."
Penick's Analysis: Despite two straight losses, Condit's still one of the best fighters at 170 lbs. He's got areas he needs to address, notably his wrestling game, and he knows that. If he closes those holes, he could easily work his way back to title contention. A fight with Diaz would be excellent if Diaz decides to continue fighting, but other than that Condit is ready and willing for whomever else in the top 10 makes sense.
