After making a successful debut in the UFC on one of the biggest platforms possible, Daniel Cormier's hoping to get another fight on free television. The Strikeforce Heavyweight World Grand Prix victor said during Saturday's UFC on FX 8 post-fight show that he's hoping to return this August, and he wanted his Fuel TV cohort Chael Sonnen to be joining him.
"I want to fight on the first card on Fox Sports 1 in Boston on August 17 and I hope my man Chael Sonnen is fighting Wanderlei Silva next to me," Cormier said. "Put us on the card, boss!"
Cormier's hoping to keep himself active in the heavyweight division while slowly, but surely, making the cut down to light heavyweight. Though he hasn't gotten an opponent set, he's interested in a number of potential options in the top end, depending on what happens this week at UFC 160.
As for Sonnen-Silva, though there's been plenty of talking between the two already, there's still no progress in it actually coming together yet for the UFC's Fox Sports 1 debut.
Penick's Analysis: Cormier against Roy Nelson would be a good fight to make for the FS1 debut, as would Cormier-Mark Hunt if the New Zealand native pulls off an upset over Junior dos Santos this weekend. Those are the realistically interesting fights for Cormier if Alistair Overeem is indeed fighting Travis Browne as previously reported. But with that fight now yet confirmed, I still wouldn't mind Cormier-Overeem in the least, either, though he'd be pushed back a couple weeks in the case. Still, from the looks of things, I'd imagine Cormier-Nelson's the route they'll be going, and it could come together shortly.
