Vinny Magalhaes called Phil Davis a lot of things heading into UFC 159, and said Davis was the most beatable fighter in the top ten. Well, he failed to beat him, dropping a one-sided unanimous decision on pay-per-view.
The fight started off well enough, with both fighters scoring strikes early on, but it was clear that Davis was the better striker. Magalhaes had one takedown in the first frame, and tried to turn it into something, but he lost his hold on Davis and from there his confidence. Davis also rocked him in the first frame with a head kick that was partially blocked, but failed to put him away.
From there, it became a one-sided striking match, with Davis out-landing Magalhaes at every turn, avoiding the limited takedown attempts Magalhaes sent his way, and pressuring throughout. It was a solid, if unspectacular performance, and Davis is now back on the rise.
He's won two straight in the light heavyweight division (along with an eye poke no contest) after his loss to Rashad Evans last year, and he feels he's improving overall as a fighter. Magalhaes, meanwhile, had a six-fight winning streak snapped in the fight.
