After scoring his third straight win in the UFC in December, Mike Pierce was hoping to get a top ten opponent his next time out. The UFC felt otherwise, as MMAJunkie.com reports that he has been booked against David Mitchell this July at UFC 162.
Pierce holds an 8-3 record in the UFC to date, with all three losses coming by decision to top end opponents in Jon Fitch, Johny Hendricks, and Josh Koscheck. Following the Koscheck loss last February, Pierce went on to defeat Carlos Eduardo Rocha, Aaron Simpson, and Seth Baczynski. But his usually less than thrilling style hasn't endeared him to the UFC, and so he's got a lateral matchup in Mitchell.
This will be the fourth fight in the UFC for Mitchell, who has gone the distance in each of his first three fights, which were separated by a significant injury layoff. Mitchell lost decisions to T.J. Waldburger and Paulo Thiago in 2010 and 2011, the only two losses of his career, and spent the entirety of 2012 on the sidelines. He returned in January at UFC on Fox 6, defeating Simeon Thoresen by decision.
UFC 162 will air live on pay-per-view from Las Vegas, headlined by the Middleweight Championship bout between Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman.
