When an injury took Rory MacDonald out of last month's UFC 158 event in Montreal, he lost out on a rematch with Carlos Condit that he's been gunning for since suffering his first and only career loss. Condit wound up fighting Johny Hendricks on the card instead, losing a decision in his second straight defeat.
With those consecutive losses, the UFC opted to book MacDonald against someone else for his return, and he'll instead take on Jake Ellenberger at UFC on Fox 8 in Seattle this July.
TheProvince.com was the first to report the bout, with the UFC confirming the booking shortly thereafter.
MacDonald has won four straight fights into the July event, most recently defeating B.J. Penn in a one-sided performance on the last UFC on Fox card in Seattle in December. He'll now try to move closer to the title picture against Ellenberger, who has gotten his career back on track after a loss to Martin Kampmann last year.
Ellenberger bounced back from that loss in October of last year, defeating Jay Hieron at UFC on FX 5 in Minneapolis. But it was his win at UFC 158 that vaulted him back up, as he knocked out Nate Marquardt in perhaps his biggest career win.
No headliner has been announced yet for UFC on Fox 8, which will come to Seattle's KeyArena on July 27, but Flyweight Champ Demetrious Johnson is trying to heal up in order to return on that card.
