"I wanted to have another match against Tri-Star and head coach Firas Zahabi and it's not being done because of any bad blood. I feel like I have more to show them and without a doubt Rory has a lot of hype surrounding him. I can see why, he's done great so far. He's in great condition, he can kick, punch, he can wrestle and he knows how to fight on the ground. Everyone is saying he's going to be one of the top guys and those are the guys I like to fight. It works out two ways for me; I get to face a really good opponent and I get to compete against Firas again."
-B.J. Penn comments on his reasonings for wanting to fight Rory MacDonald in an interview for his personal site.
Penick's Analysis: This is a pride issue for B.J. Penn. He thinks he can out-think and out-work someone from Zahabi's stable at Tri-Star, and because he's not going to get a third fight with Georges St-Pierre, MacDonald allows him that opportunity. As he says, it's not a bad blood issue, but in coming out of retirement he's going to feel like he has something to prove in this fight. It's a really tough fight to come into given how long he's been out of action, but If he can pull off what should be considered an upset on Dec. 8, it will be absolutely huge for him in his return.
