The UFC's fifth event on Fuel TV got off to an unfortunate start on Saturday, as Duane "Bang" Ludwig blew out his left knee in the first round of his fight with Che Mills, calling a halt to the action before the fight really got going.
Mills had opened up with an impressive attack, landing several strikes and scoring a nice trip takedown. He had tried working in some strikes on the ground, but Ludwig defended fairly well and eventually worked to his feet.
As they grappled against the cage, Ludwig's knee seemed to buckle, and as he fell to the canvas he motioned to his knee. Mills let up, and referee Herb Dean called the bout due to the injury. The knee may have been injured initially from the trip takedown, then went out on him as the round continued. The bout was finished just halfway into the opening frame.
Still, the bout goes down as a win for Mills, who bounced back from a loss to Rory MacDonald in his last bout, moving him to 2-1 inside the UFC's Octagon. For Ludwig, the unfortunately timed injury results in his third straight loss in the UFC, all of which have come in 2012.
