The UFC has added another formidable force to their flyweight division, as 27-year-old Shooto South America Champion Jussier "Formiga" da Silva will be joining the 125 lb. ranks.
The Nova Uniao product announced his signing alongside his coach Andre Pederneiras in a video interview with video interview with CanalOSS.
"I am very happy with this signing," da Silva said (transcribed by Globo, via BloodyElbow.com). "I always dreamed of this since they created the division. The time has come. I'll try to do a good job. I did good fights here in Brazil and want to show it because I am the South American champion of Shooto."
The very talented and exciting da Silva is a teammate of UFC Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo, and he brings with him a stellar 14-1 record. Six of those wins have come by way of submission, and his sole loss came by decision against UFC Flyweight Tournament competitor Ian McCall.
Penick's Analysis: This is a fantastic signing by the UFC and a great addition to the flyweight roster. Da Silva is quickly going to find himself in the title picture in the division, and one win in his UFC debut may put him in line for the first defense by either Demetrious Johnson or Joseph Benavidez. I can't wait to see him inside the Octagon, and if you don't know who he is yet, you'll find out soon enough.
