On Saturday night in Las Vegas, English welterweight Dan Hardy had his hand raised in victory for the first time in two and a half years, knocking out Duane "Bang" Ludwig in the first round at UFC 146.
Hardy's rapid rise and even faster fall in the welterweight division has been well documented, and heading into Saturday's event he was at risk of becoming only the second fighter to lose five consecutive fights in the Octagon.
However, Hardy had other plans, and after a few minutes of back and forth action on the feet and in the clinch, he landed a stutter-step left hook that dropped Ludwig to the mat. That knock down in and of itself caused Hardy to raise his arms in celebration, but he then quickly snapped back into the fight and engaged on the ground.
After landing a series of elbows to the head, Hardy had Ludwig out cold, and the referee stepped in to stop the fight. For Hardy, it was his first victory since a decision over Mike Swick in November of 2009, snapping that four fight losing streak. Ludwig, meanwhile, drops to 2-4 in his most recent stint in the UFC.
