A major welterweight contender bout between Josh Koscheck and Johny Hendricks is headed to the UFC on Fox 3 card this May, UFC President Dana White announced on Sunday.
Koscheck picked up his second straight win last weekend, edging past Mike Pierce by decision at UFC 143. That was a follow up to his knockout win over Matt Hughes last September in his first fight since losing to Georges St-Pierre in a title bout at UFC 124.
Hendricks, meanwhile, picked up the biggest win of his career in December, knocking out perennial top contender Jon Fitch in seconds at UFC 141. The win was his third straight, and brought his career record to 12-1.
UFC on Fox 3 takes place on May 5 from the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey, headlined by the lightweight bout between Jim Miller and Nate Diaz.
Penick's Analysis: This is a fantastic fight, and will put the winner right in line for a number one contender fight their next time out, likely against the winner of this week's Diego Sanchez vs. Jake Ellenberger fight. This is another huge opportunity for Hendricks to claim his spot in the welterweight division, while Koscheck has a chance to avenge his teammate Fitch.
