By: Alex Williams, MMATorch Contributor Dave Meltzer at Figure 4 Weekly Online reports that Cheick Kongo is the "leading candidate" to face Brock Lesnar in Lesnar's next bout. Kongo lost to Heath Herring two fights ago, but in the last year, he's also defeated Mirko Cro Cop, who previously destroyed Herring. Now, Cro Cop was not the same fighter against Kongo that he was against Herring, but the point is not easy to say that this is automatically a step down in quality for Lesnar since "he just beat the guy that beat Kongo."
Considering the UFC's options, Kongo seems to be the right pick. Lesnar is probably not ready for Fabricio Werdum, and given Brandon Vera's first round lost to Werdum and lackluster light heavyweight debut, Lesnar/Vera has no sizzle. Of course, a Frank Mir rematch is out since Mir is tied-up with Minotauro. Cain Velasquez and Shane Carwin are supposed to be future stars with Lesnar, not his early opponents. That leaves Kongo and Gabriel Gonzaga. Gonzaga has a ground game that Kongo doesn't and less of a name. Kongo is the better choice for making money in the short term and continuing the ascendancy of Lesnar's star.
