UFC 94 on January 31st features a Champion vs. Champion main event between B.J. Penn and Georges St. Pierre. The undercard for that event will now feature a match up that could very well determine the #1 contender for the Light Heavyweight Championship that will be decided between Forrest Griffin and Rashad Evans Next month. MMAJunkie.com is reporting that Lyoto Machida will face off against Thiago Silva at UFC 94. This was a fight that was supposed to take place at UFC 89, until Silva came up injured weeks before the event. This adds another big fight to the UFC 94 card for Super Bowl weekend.
Penick's Analysis: This is a fight that I was really looking forward to for UFC 89, so I'm glad we're going to get to see this one after all. The winner of this fight should get the first shot at the winner of Griffin/Evans, so this will be a big fight in that regard as well. Both guys have stellar records, and while many have complained about Machida's style in the past, he's still a very good fighter. He's a very smart fighter as well, and we'll see if he can come up with something to topple Silva in January. This is yet another example of the UFC on a roll with their fight cards. This has been a very good year in terms of big fights and big events, and next year looks to continue that trend.
