The Ultimate Fighter report
October 14, 2009
By Frank Hyden

We start with Team Rashad training. Matt Mitrione has a hurt shoulder. He wants to get a cortisone shot to numb the pain. His coach, Rashad Evans, says no. He thinks it's a dumb idea because a shot only masks the pain, it doesn't eliminate it. Matt says he has a football player's mentality. Marcus Jones thinks that he's going to fight next. Rashad and his assistant coaches tell him that he might be next picked to fight, but that he doesn't know for sure. They're toying with him. I hope they do pick him to fight next. I want to see what Marcus can do in the octagon. I know he has lots of power, but what else can he do?

Team Rampage is training. Quinton Jackson is showing the team how to wallwalk, where you scoot over to the cage, put your back into the side of the cage, and get yourself up. Zak Jensen isn't very good at wallwalking. He's a good wrestler, but when he gets on his back, he freaks out. Later that day, Wes Sims rags on Zak for something he did in the shower. Apparently, Zak used the shower before Wes, who almost slipped on something in the shower. Wes accuses Zak of beating off in the shower, then leaving his wad in there. Zak says that he blew his nose in there, but that he didn't masturbate. It's pretty disgusting either way. It's like that Seinfeld episode where George pissed in the shower at the gym. To paraphrase Jerry, "Just because there's a drain in there doesn't make it a toilet."

Matt's shoulder is apparently still hurt, so he gets wrapped up in some green plastic. I guess that's supposed to allow him to train still. Matt's nickname is Meathead. That about sums it up. Matt keeps saying he wants to fight. Rashad complains to his assistants about Matt not wanting to train fully, but still wanting to fight. A funny moment happens at Team Rampage's training. They're rolling around when the sound of snoring rings out. Zak passed out in someone's choke. He either forgot to tap or didn't tap in time. Zak gets weirder by the moment.

Back at the house, James McSweeney thinks that Matt's faking. Some of the other fighters in the house agree. Matt's in the pool playing basketball, and showing no ill signs. His shoulder seems to be fine. Matt even looks good in practice, spinning around and using his shoulder effectively. Mike Van Arsdale shows his shoulder, which looks really nasty. He explains that he had an injury, Matt has an oowie. Matt wants to ice his shoulder and work on his right hand. Rashad tells him no, that he doesn't need to. Team Rampage keeps giving Zak crap. Kimbo Slice tells him to laugh it off, which is very good advice that Zak should listen to.

Rashad announces that the next fight is Justin Wren vs. Wes Sims. Marcus is very upset, since he was certain he was going to fight next. He looks really hurt and pissed. Rashad tells him that he'll get his chance to fight soon. Justin Wren trains really hard, he's a good wrestler with a good ground game. Wes talks with Kimbo at the house. Kimbo is positive that he'll get another chance to fight in the house. Wes is also a wrestler, but he's a frigging idiot. The guy comes on too strong, it's like he's trying too hard. He reminds me of those characters on television that say odd things at inopportune moments, like that's supposed to be so hilarious. He tries to pass himself off as a crazy person, but he seems more like someone pretending to be crazy. He's like a water head. I don't know if he's supposed to be funny or something, but he's not.

Castrol GTX brings up the official weigh-in, and they might want their money back after this. Justin takes off his pants and has some pinkish, purplish panties on. Wes then shows off his black speedo. This is truly disgusting. What the hell's going on? Just go naked if you have to, don't show off some panties. Wes has a lot more experience than Justin, but Justin hopes to use his youth to his advantage. He sure wins the nastiest underwear competition.

FIGHT- Justin Wren vs. Wes Sims

Wes has a 7 inch height and a 6 inch reach advantage. Herb Dean is the referee.

ROUND 1- Justin clinches, and they exchange shots. Wes lands a nice jab that he should keep throwing. Justin gets the takedown, and goes to side control. He works his way to mount, but then then slides over to side control again. Justin locks in a tight arm triangle. Herb Dean checks on Wes, who passed out. Damn, that was quick.

WINNER- Justin Wren by Arm Triangle

Rampage doesn't go into the cage again. Once again, Rashad does go into the cage and checks on Rampage's fighter. Rashad says it really bothers him that Rampage is so disrespectful. Rashad goes into the hallway and confronts Rampage about it. Rampage says that it's not a respect thing, it's more about him being so pissed that he doesn't want to take it out on the fighter. I understand being upset, but you have to try to be a coach here. I really like Rampage, but he's a horrible coach. The only guy who's even close to being this bad was Ken Shamrock, and he was just misguided as to what was important. He still checked on his fighters afterward. This season is fairly damaging to Rampage's image. Rashad calls out Rampage for his actions. This is getting heated. Rampage walks away, and Rashad has a few more words for him.

That was amazingly quick. How the hell did Wes lose that fast? He has so much more experience, and that's all he could muster? Either Justin's a savant, or Wes just sucks. I think it's more likely the latter. That's embarrassing how quick he lost. He did deliver on his promise to be memorable, though. I would hope that this shuts Wes up, but based on the previews for next week, that's not happening. The rule should be that if you lose in less time than it takes to actually walk to the octagon, you need to just shut the hell up. At least be quiet for the next few weeks, until that fight is more a distant memory. I just find Rampage too entertaining to bash him too much. He really deserves to be ripped big for not going into the cage to check on his fighters after a loss. I'll leave that ripping to others. It does make him seem like a douche, though.

NEXT WEEK- Darill Schoonover confronts Rampage
