The Ultimate Fighter report
May 5, 2010
By Frank Hyden
The episode starts with Kyacey Uscola complaining more about Tito Ortiz pushing the guys so hard in practice. Kyacey says it's counterproductive to train so hard before a fight.
Elsewhere, Chuck Liddell returns after missing the last fight. He pals around with some of the fighters. Kris McCray, who was in the last fight, says that he doesn't think that Tito overtrains at all. Kris says he likes being pushed so hard. Jamie Yager agrees and says he also likes the training. James Hammortree also doesn't think the training is too hard.
Nick Ring also likes the training. Tito gets all the fighters into a circle to try to air out their differences. Kyacey talks a little, but seems a bit hesitant to complain as much to Tito. I think he doesn't want to be accused of being weak.
The Coaches Challenge this season is dodgeball. Team Liddell is getting the early advantage. Chuck is really good. Team Liddell wins the first game. In Game two Team Punishment gets the early lead. However, it comes down to Chuck vs. Tito. Chuck quickly dispatches Tito to win. Game three comes down to Chuck vs. Tito again. Chuck wins again and Tito is upset. Team Liddell is pumped after the 3-0 sweep. Tito vows revenge in the octagon.
Chuck gets to pick the fight this week. The fight this episode is Court McGee vs. Nick Ring. Nick is supposed to be a really good fighter so hopefully it'll be a good fight. Dana White eats a little crow about his early prediction of Tito winning the season.
Court is a workout maniac, he loves working hard and trying to get better. Chuck tells Court to beware of Nick's kicks. The strategy is to either stay in close, or far away. John Hackleman makes his usual absurd statement when he says that he'd take Court against Godzilla. Court tells the guys about his drug addict days. Apparently, he was clinically dead at one point. He's clean now. That's good for him, if he can use fighting to stay clean. James Hammortree gets hurt in practice and James starts moaning like crazy. He says he had tingling and such in his back. The medics have to take him out on a stretcher. That must be scary as hell for him. He's moving his arms, though, so hopefully it's nothing too major.
Nick is a stand-up fighter with ground skills. Court is a wrestler with ground skills. Tito thinks Nick will win by submission. James twisted his spine, but no permanent damage. The weigh-in goes smoothly. Each of the fighter's teammates think that their guy will win. You could almost just transpose the names and use what was said for either guy. Nick is confident, as is Court. John Hackleman gives Court a pep talk. Both guys are focused on winning.
Spike shows an AMP commercial during the break, the one with Uriah Faber in it. I got to wonder if Faber might be done as a title contender. He set the bar really high, but now guys have surpassed him. When that happens, it's hard for guys who were once the man to reclaim their throne. Spike also showed another of those stupid Old Spice commercials. I hate those things.
FIGHT- Court McGee vs. Nick Ring
Nick has a 3 inch height advantage, but Court has a 4 inch reach advantage. Josh Rosenthal is the referee.
ROUND 1- Court throws a high kick before getting a takedown. Court is in Nick's guard. Court's not doing much, neither is Nick. Rosenthal tells them to work to advance. They stand up. Nick shows some of his better stand-up, though Court also looks good. Nick throws some good legkicks. They clinch. Both guys throw knees to the body and thighs. They separate. Court goes for another takedown, but Nick sprawls. Nick tries to take Court's back, but can't. Nick is in Court's half-guard. Nick is working a little ground-and-pound. Court works Nick back to his guard. Both guys trade punches from the ground as the round ends.
ROUND 2- Both coaches are giving their guys advice. They trade early. Nick with a powerful legkick. Both guys are measuring their shots. More legkicks by Nick. Another legkick by Nick. Court fires back, but Nick is getting the better of it. Court clinches. They trade body shots before separating. Court with a few power shots. Nick with another legkick. Court goes for a sloppy takedown, but Nick avoids. Straight right by Nick. Good counter-shot by Court. A straight jab by Nick lands. They clinch again. Both guys are trading. Chuck and Yager argue about who won what round.
The fighters are discussing the fight over the highlights. Team Liddell guys say Court won, while Team Punishment says Nick won. We've got a split decision win for Nick Ring.
WINNER- Nick Ring by Split Decision
Chuck is puzzled by the decision. Dana White says to never let it go to the judges. Chuck gives Dana the evil eye for some reason. Chuck is pissed about the judges decision. Chuck says that Court won the fight. Court says he'll come back stronger.
The fight this week was fairly good. It had some good action. I don't think that Nick is as good at stand-up as Tito said, but he did all right. Chuck was surprisingly good at dodgeball. It seemed like Tito was made of concrete or something, he couldn't move for anything. I always like seeing these guys doing stuff that they're not that good at. It shows you a different side of them. All in all, it was a good episode.
NEXT WEEK- The final Opening Round fight, and the Wild Card match-up is set.
