INVICTA FC 13
JULY 9, 2015
LIVE FROM LAS VEGAS, NEVADA

Invicta FC returns to UFC Fight Pass tonight with another Cris "Cyborg" Justino fight, and we'll have coverage of tonight's event right here as it kicks off at 11PM ET. We'll be bringing quick thoughts on tonight's prelims, with a full round by round report for the three title fights set for the card.

=====Preliminary Card Quick Results=====

-Amber Leibrock def. Marina Shafir via TKO at :37 of the first round

Note: Leibrock did hold on to the cage a bit to keep herself standing, but beat the crap out of Shafir from that position to score the TKO win. Ronda's best friend has had trouble translating her game to MMA, and that continued here.

-Jamie Moyle def. Amy Montenegro via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)

Note: Solid, decently entertaining fight. Not a ton to it from either fighter, but had enough action to keep attention. Moyle seemed to deserve the decision overall.

-Amber Brown def. Catherine Costigan via submission (rear naked choke) at 3:34 of the first round

Note: Absolute domination from Brown. She got Costigan down almost immediately, and methodically worked for that RNC finish. Good work from Brown.

-Pannie Kianzad def. Jessica-Rose Clark via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Note: One-sided fight. Not entirely thrilling, but a more than serviceable performance en route to victory.

=====Title Fights Round by Round Report=====

FIGHT ONE: HERICA TIBURCIO VS. AYAKA HAMASAKI (WOMEN'S ATOMWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

ROUND ONE: Hamasaki had success early with her counter striking, connecting on more through the first half of the round than the Champion. Tiburcio was throwing a bit, but in the first half failed to land much. Tiburcio hurt Hamasaki with a body shot late and locked on a guillotine, pulling guard, but she lost the hold in what looked like a great spot for her. Hamasaki got her to half guard, while Tiburcio landed some strikes to the body. The Champ rode out the round on top.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Tiburcio. Hamasaki was hurt bad there, but Tiburcio couldn't quite finish it off. Still, the Champ took some of the best strikes from the challenger, and came on strong late.

ROUND TWO: They traded strikes early on, then Tiburcio essentially pulled guard. Hamasaki was able to free herself and pass to half guard. Tiburcio tried to explode out, but couldn't get free. She again tried to escape, but Hamasaki held position despite not doing much with it. Hamasaki postured up for some hard strikes. Tiburcio got her back to full guard. They were stood up with two minutes left. Slightly questionable on Kim Winslow's part. Hamasaki landed a hard right hand back on the feet. Tibuurcio tried to rush. She went for a takedown but got reversed and wound up on her back. Hamasaki was content to hold position for the post part, keeping herself on top as she tried to escape to a better position. They were stood up again. Hamasaki shot in late, but Tiburcio went for a last second choke attempt.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Hamasaki. Did much more work that round than the reigning Champion.

ROUND THREE: Hamasaki came out striking aggressively, and backed Tiburcio to the cage. Hamasaki turned a trip attempt to a takedown. Tiburcio pulled full guard briefly. Tiburcio tried to take a crack on here last on the straight. Hamasaki bulled her to the cage more than midway through the round. Tiburcio somehow managed to swing around to take Hamasaki's back late. That battle continued for a while, and ended with Tiburcio on her back.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Tiburcio. The late positional advantage gave it to her.

ROUND FOUR: They grappled early, and Hamasaki scored a takedown. She landed some strikes to the body. Tiburcio tried to explode out, but Hamasaki held position in half guard. Tiburcio tried to escape again, but Hamasaki continued to hold position. Tiburcio got back to guard, but was still on her back. Kim Winslow stood them up again surprisingly. Hamasaki pulled off an excellent trip takedown right into half guard. Tiburcio tried to set up an armbar off her back, but Hamasaki avoided the attempt. Hamasaki continued to remain patient on top without doing much. Hamasaki ended the round on top.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Hamasaki. Top control is the difference thus far.

ROUND FIVE: Hamasaki scored another quick takedown, and she attacked for a straight armbar as Tiburcio tried to scramble. Tiburcio's arm got trapped as she turtled up, and she ate several strikes. Hamasaki tried to hold position as Tiburcio tried to scramble. Tiburcio finally escaped midway through the round. They traded strikes. Hamasaki landed a short combo. They traded strikes with Hamasaki getting the better of the exchange. Hamasaki shot in and scored a late takedown. Tiburcio tried to escape to no avail. Though she didn't do much, Hamasaki effectively held position down the stretch. Tiburcio attacked late for a triangle but it was too late.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Hamasaki. Not a ton to it, but it seems Tiburcio's going to lose this title.

WINNER: Hamasaki via split decision (48-47, 47-48, 49-46)

STAR RATING: (**) Competitive 25-minute fight, but not a ton overall to the bout. Hamasaki did managed to score several takedowns, but failed to do a whole lot with them. Still, Tiburcio couldn't get up off her back and that cost her the belt.

FIGHT TWO: IRENE ALDANA VS. TONYA EVINGER (VACANT BANTAMWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP)

ROUND ONE: Evinger dropped Aldana in what looked a bit like a slip early on. Evinger tried to attack for a leg, but Aldana scrambled with her. She held off the kneebar attack, but Evinger got in some hard elbows. The next scramble ended with Evinger in Aldana's guard. Aldana attacked off her back, but Evinger passed out and stayed busy on top. She got to mount off another escape attempt. She landed some big strikes from the top as Aldana tried desperately to break free. Evinger held position for some offense. Evinger transitioned to an armbar and Aldana again tried to break free. She avoided tapping, but Evinger held top position nearly got back to mount before getting held to half guard. She landed a couple of strikes, then went for a late kimura attempt. Aldana took some strikes but avoided the sub attempt. Evinger landed some big strikes late, and again went for an armbar late, but Aldana scrambled to top position before the horn.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Evinger. Significant round in the veteran's favor there.

ROUND TWO: Minor strikes early from both. Evinger landed a couple of hard strikes. Evinger got another takedown. She got Aldana down again. Aldana wasn't able to do much off her back, and thus spent much of the frame on her back. Not a ton was done on either end, but Evinger managed to spend most of the frame on top.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Evinger. Not a ton to it, still her round.

ROUND THREE: Aldana missed a few strikes early. She stuffed a shot attempt and scored a few strikes. Evinger went for her own attempt. but got stuffed. They scrambled to their feet late. They separated midway through the round. Evinger closed distance again. The fight moved to the clinch midway through. Evinger powered her down. She moved back to mount. She landed a few strikes and tried to attack, but Aldana nearly escaped off the cage. That didn't happen, and Evinger ended another round on top.

Penick's Analysis: Evinger's winning this pretty handily this far.

ROUND FOUR: Evinger landed an early kick, and continued to press in. They separated following a brief clinch. Aldana stuffed a takedown attempt. They got to the ground again, and Evinger wound up in mount once more. Evinger continued to work form the advantageous position. She got herself to mount and started unloading shots. That kept up, and finally the ref stepped in to stop the fight.

WINNER: Evinger via TKO at 4:38 of the fourth round

STAR RATINGS: (**) Another solidly competitive if unspectacular fight on this card. Big win for Evinger, but not much else to say about that fight.

MAIN EVENT FIGHT THREE: CRIS "CYBORG" JUSTINO VS. FAITH VAN DUIN (FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE)

ROUND ONE: Cyborg moved straight ahead and wasted little time grabbing a clinch off a couple of strikes. She snuck behind Van Duin and got in a few strikes before separating. She backed Van Duin up with a combination, floored her, then finished it off with a few strikes on the ground. That's all there is to it this time around, and that's another win for Cyborg.

WINNER: Cyborg via TKO at :45 of the first round

STAR RATING: (**-) Just another quick win under Cyborg's belt. Really not much to this one overall.

-That's another victory for Cyborg outside of the confines of the UFC. It was a victory needed to keep her moving closer to a Ronda Rousey fight, but doesn't really tell us anything we don't know. We'll be back this weekend for more live MMA coverage!
