WSOF 21
JUNE 5, 2015
FROM EDMONTON, ALBERTA, CANADA

-We're delayed tonight in coverage on the WSOF card on NBCSN, but we're bringing our "virtual time" report now for the event. Follow along as we catch up on tonight's action!

-Someone named Mike Corey is on the call tonight alongside Renzo Gracie, and things kick off in the featherweight division.

FIGHT ONE: HAKEEM DAWODU VS. CHUKA WILLIS (FEATHERWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Willis immediately shot in and clinched, and got a quick takedown. He got Dawodu's back and got both hooks in almost immediately. He tried to set up a choke as Dawodu sat up and pressed Willis' back to the cage. Dawodu got to his feet, but got slammed back down fairly quickly. Dawodu again managed to get to his feet, and this time stayed up, eventually separating. Willis landed a winging overhand right. Willis shot in for a single leg off a winging punch. He drove Dowadu to the cage, but couldn't bring him down. Dowadu got separation again and stalked. Willis circled around the cage. They had a sloppy exchange. Dowadu landed a short counter strike. Dowadu landed a few big strikes before Willis grabbed a clinch. That's how they ended things.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Willis. Not a ton of effective work from either guy there. Some low level MMA kicking off this televised card right now.

ROUND TWO: Willis circled all the way around the cage as Dawodu tried to walk him down. Willis threw out some real sloppy strikes and then shot in. Dawodu sprawled and took Willis' back. He landed some strikes, but Willis got to his feet and separated. Willis shot in and scored a solid takedown, but Dawodu got up to his feet easily on the cage. Willis landed a right hand as they separated. Dawodu got in a hard knee to the body and drove Willis to the cage. He got in some more knees to the body. He landed several more strikes before backing off. Williis looked exhausted. Dawodu timed a knee very well and landed it as he sprawled a takedown attempt. He got in another knee to the body. Willis was not doing much of anything against the cage. He ate another knee to the body, along with several knees and elbows. Willis gave a look to the referee and he called it off. He was definitely done there, and he collapsed to the mat after the fight was called.

WINNER: Dawodu via TKO at 2:55 of the second round

STAR RATING: (**-) Solid finish for Dawodu, but it came about because the inexperienced Willis just had nothing left to offer. Again, far from high level stuff here.

-Corey asked Gracie if Dawodu is close to ready for a title shot, and Gracie responded positively. Where are Todd Harris and Bas Rutten again? Did I really just ask that? It feels... wrong.

-And now it's time to skip over the next 15 minutes. DVR's are excellent.

FIGHT TWO: SMEALINHO RAMA VS. BLAGOY IVANOV (HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP)

-Ivanov weighed in just this evening for the fight after visa issues wouldn't allow him to enter Canada until after Thursday's weigh-ins.

ROUND ONE: Rama's terrible tattoos (could be his shop name) follow Ivanov around the cage early, eventually throwing a kick to the body nearly a minute into the round for the first strike of the fight. Ivanov popped Rama's head back with a right hand, but Rama did a solid job holding him off as he tried to rush in. Rama landed a body kick, but Ivanov caught it and dropped him. He avoided a shoulder lock and tried to take advantage. However, Rama escaped and worked to his feet, separating fairly easily. Rama backed Ivanov up to the cage, but he got tagged with a left hand. Rama landed a hard combination. They traded a few hard strikes. Rama stayed the aggressor. Ivanov got in a solid knee to the body in a brief exchange. Rama started getting a bit more active while avoiding Ivanov's returns. Ivanov got in a solid jab. He landed a right hook. Rama landed a nice left hand. Rama landed a combination late, and again, with Ivanov returning fire to end the round.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Rama. Solidly competitive, but Rama did an overall better job landing and pressing the pace.

ROUND TWO: Rama immediately moved forward and pressed Ivanov back. He landed a solid counter, then got in a straight left. Ivanov tried to rush in with a combo. Both missed a few strikes. Rama connected on a combination. He landed another. Ivanov got in a left hand. They traded punches. Ivanov connected on a short combination of his own. They traded punches. Rama landed a leg kick, but got dropped from a hard leg kick landed by Ivanov. Rama landed a few solid punches in combination. He kept Ivanov backed up on the cage. Rama landed a really nice combination which he started with a sneaky little leg kick. Ivanov pressed him back with a hard right hand. Rama got cut open badly from a strike under the left eye. It was bleeding profusely as he continued stalking. Ivanov tried to press in late, but both missed a few strikes. Rama kept pressing in to the horn.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Rama. He's still mostly in control of the action, despite the late damage taken.

ROUND THREE: We're now in the midst of Rama's longest career fight. He landed a couple of strikes as he stalked early. Ivanov got in a hard jab as Rama pressed in. Ivanov landed another hard counter-strike off a missed punch. Ivanov landed another big flurry of punches. He hurt Rama and drove him down to the ground. He looked for a guillotine, and held onto the front finger choke as Rama stood. Ivanov had it on tight and Rama tapped! Good for Ivanov.

WINNER: Ivanov via submission (guillotine choke) at 1:17 of the third round

STAR RATING: (**) Real sloppy through the first 12 minutes or so, but a really nice finish from Ivanov, who has had one hell of a tumultuous career. Really nice win for him in a somewhat entertaining fight.

MAIN EVENT FIGHT THREE: LANCE PALMER VS. CHRIS HORODECKI (FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP)

-And it's time for Jazz Securo to ask someone, please, just somebody, anybody, anyone at all, please would you just make some noyeeeeeeze?!?!?!

ROUND ONE: Horodecki went for a head kick early that was blocked. Bit of a tentative start as both felt out the range. Palmer got in a hard inside leg kick. He missed a big overhand left. Palmer landed a nice straight left on Horodecki's chin, but it was absorbed. They traded strikes in the center. Horodecki landed a solid strike as he countered. Palmer timed a takedown nicely, and quickly passed to half guard. Horodecki tried to get out, but Palmer quickly transitioned to his back and tried to get both hooks in. He went for the neck crank as he wasn't under the chin, but Horodecki got out. Horodecki escaped and fought out of a choke attempt to get on top, but Palmer popped to his feet. Horodecki tried to press forward. Palmer scored another takedown briefly, then Horodecki made a mistake on a throw attempt, and Palmer flattened him out against the cage. Palmer landed some big strikes, then went for the rear naked choke, forcing the late first round tap. Good work from Palmer to retain the belt.

WINNER: Palmer via submission (rear naked choke) at 4:28 of the first round

STAR RATING: (**+) Solid fight, entertaining work from Palmer to retain the title. Not a whole lot else to the fight.

-Thanks for tuning in to our delayed report! We'll be back with live coverage Saturday night on the UFC Fight Night 68 card.
