WSOF 19
MARCH 28, 2015
LIVE FROM PHOENIX, ARIZONA

-We go live on NBCSN with a very different lineup than was initially planned, but still some solid stuff on tap for tonight, at least so far as the main event is concerned. Justin Gaethje is always worth watching, and seeing if he continues his run adds some significant intrigue. It's Kenny Rice and Bas Rutten on the call tonight; I prefer Rice to Todd Harris, at least, but that's a low bar.

FIGHT ONE: JAKE HEUN VS. CLIFFORD STARKS (LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: Heun looks massive next to Starks, who was supposed to fight in a middleweight bout tonight. Heun landed a couple of kicks early as he circled around. He went high with one that was partially blocked. Starks connected on a left hand. Heun threw a quick flurry but didn't really find a home. Starks caught a kick and tried to turn it into a takedown, but Heun rolled through and scrambled immediately to his feet. Heun landed a couple of strikes as Starks rushed in and they clinched. Heun separated with a solid knee and a couple of strikes behind it. Heun landed a hard body kick, but it was caught, and Starks took him down after eating a few more strikes during the attempt. Starks slowed things down and landed a couple of strikes. Heun tried to scramble out, but Starks held position. Things slowed down further. Heun exploded out and got to his feet, but Starks took his back standing. Heun spun out with a big elbow that seemed to hurt Starks. He got in a couple of strikes. Starks rushed in again. Heun tried for a guillotine choke, but wound up on his back to the horn.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Starks. Close round, and Heun did some damage, but Starks' top control with some damage of his own took the frame.

ROUND TWO: Heun came rushing out. He landed a few strikes. Starks grabbed a clinch and landed a knee, but it went low and brought a halt to the action. Actually both got hit low in a double knee-to-the-groin moment. Starks got in with a straight right. He landed another right hand as Heun missed a strike. Starks shot in again and scored a takedown a minute into the round. Heun got to his feet. He landed a hard knee, but then got dropped by a left hand from Starks. Starks came back ahead and landed some strikes as he got Heun to the ground. Heun reversed and landed a few strikes, but then threw a knee at the downed Starks. The referee stepped in and deducted a point from Heun. Starks pressed forward as they restarted and quickly scored another takedown. Starks tried to be busy in the guard, but didn't do a ton. Heun tried to escape, but Starks held him down. Heun went for a kimura but lost it. He got his back to the cage and tried to get up, only to get dragged back down. Starks tried to set up an arm triangle choke. He got it locked on and Heun tapped! Well then. Credit to Starks for a very solid performance considering he was supposed to fight 20 lbs. lighter tonight.

WINNER: Starks via submission (arm triangle choke) at 4:11 of the second round

STAR RATING: (**) Decent little fight; the double groin shots early in the second will live on, but outside of that it's a nice story for Starks here, who stepped up 20 lbs. today for that win.

FIGHT TWO: ED WEST VS. TIMUR VALIEV (BANTAMWEIGHT)

ROUND ONE: West opened with a high kick that was blocked. Valiev pressed in and scored a few strikes in succession. Valiev tried to close the distance and both missed strikes. Valiev landed a couple of hard kicks. Valiev rocked West with a right hand at the end of a combination, but missed a big uppercut that might have ended it. West worked back to his feet, but Valiev stayed on him. He started beating West up with punches and knees against the cage. He got West down to the ground and started unleashing hammerfists, forcing the referee to step in. Nice work from Valiev, kept the pressure on once he had West hurt.

WINNER: Valiev via TKO at 1:39 of the first round

STAR RATING: (**) Nice work from Valiev in what wound up being a one-sided fight. He throws some damned hard strikes, and his instincts were great after he hurt West. Very solid performance.

FIGHT THREE: THIAGO SILVA VS. TEDDY HOLDER (LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT)

Still don't like that Thiago Silva's going to be fighting on national TV in 2015 after all that happened last year.

ROUND ONE: Holder pressed ahead early. They traded punches. Silva landed a hard body kick. Holder threw several strikes in combination and forced Silva to cover up. Silva covered up as Holder threw some more strikes. Silva closed in and landed a few punches. He kept going inside with a leg kick as well. He rocked Holder with a right hand. Holder tried to hold him off on instinct. He came forward and knocked Silva down! He got on top on the ground and wound up in side control. He threw down a big series of strikes and the ref stepped in! Awesome recovery and instincts from Holder to rebound from that hard right hand. He took full advantage of this unlikely opportunity, and absolutely everyone should be pleased with that result.

WINNER: Holder via TKO at 2:00 of the first round

STAR RATING: (**+) There's your feel good moment of the night. Karmic justice at its finest, and an exciting performance from Holder in what was a completely unexpected opportunity.

MAIN EVENT FIGHT FOUR: JUSTIN GAETHJE VS. LUIS PALOMINO (WSOF LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP)

ROUND ONE: They cracked each other with simultaneous leg kicks to kick things off. Gaethje closed the distance and dropped Palomino with a two punch combo. Palomino got back to his feet and swung. Gaethje landed a couple more hard strikes. Palomino landed a couple of counters, but Gaethje continued to connect. Gaethje hurt Palomino on the cage, but the challenger recovered. Gaethje shot in, picked Palomino up, and slammed him. Palomino scrambled to his feet. Gaethje closed the distance and landed more strikes in close. He rocked Palomino with an uppercut. Palomino landed a couple hard strikes and came back at the Champ. He landed a hard right hand. Gaethje clinched and landed some more strikes in close. Palomino got some distance and landed some strikes as he came in ahead. Gaethje was slowing down, and Palomino tagged him with several. Gaethje clinched and used it to rest after a rapid-fire three minute stretch. Palomino landed a right hand. Palomino tried to rush in, then Gaethje just grabbed a side headlock and threw him to the ground. He tried to take position as Palomino turtled up Gaethje landed some hard strikes. Palomino threw an elbow behind him. Palomino got to his feet but ate a head kick. Gaethje dropped him with another big combination. Palomino got to his feet and knocked out Gaethje's mouthpiece. They halted things to get his mouthpiece back. Gaethje came back ahead and landed a leg kick. Gaethje threw a flying knee and landed several more strikes, then Palomino dropped him at the horn. Ridiculous round.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Gaethje. The Champ leaves himself open for way too many shots, but he did more damage overall.

ROUND TWO: Gaethje came straight ahead and fired off a combination as he backed Palomino to the cage. Palomino threw a few strikes that were blocked. Gaethje went high with a kick. Palomino got in with a jumping knee. Gaethje barely missed a right hand after covering up from a flurry. Palomino landed an uppercut and avoided the counter. Gaethje landed a grazing uppercut. Palomino avoided several strikes, utilizing some solid head movement. Palomino got in a few strikes and tried to rush ahead. He landed a few, but ate an uppercut. Palomino pressed Gaethje to the cage and unleashed a big flurry. Gaethje just took it all in stride, but he got cut open from that sequence. Palomino continued to connect on effective strikes. Gaethje tried to slow things down with a takedown, but Palomino worked to his feet on the cage and separated with a big combination that left Gaethje bleeding further. Gaethje came back ahead and they traded strikes. Gaethje tried to be the aggressor again, but he missed a few strikes. Things slowed down a little bit as both were showing signs of wear from this pace. More big strikes. Palomino landed another hard right hook. The back and forth continued through to the horn.

Penick's Scorecard: 10-9 Palomino. The challenger did a good job doing damage that round, and Gaethje seems to be wearing down here.

ROUND THREE: Gaethje immediately closed the distance and clinched after a couple of strikes. He backed off and landed a few punches and kicks. Palomino pressed back with a leg kick. Gaethje backed him up to the cage and threw a high kick. Things were halted to cut tape of Palomino's glove. Gaethje landed a hard left on the cage. He got inside with a kick. Palomino landed several good punches in an exchange. They clinched and Gaethje landed a hard inside elbow. He got in a couple of uppercuts. More offense from Gaethje and Palomino was cut open himself. Gaethje dropped Palomino with another hard leg kick. He landed some knees to the body as Palomino got back up. Palomino swung back with some punches. Gaethje kept the pressure on with more clinch offense. He landed several knees and elbows. He got in a couple more strikes as Palomino circled out. Gaethje landed a flying knee. He kicked out Palomino's leg again. The ref should have stopped this already. Gaethje got on top and landed a bunch of strikes to force the stoppage. That got ugly late and should have been stopped before that because of those leg kicks. Nasty stuff from Gaethje.

WINNER: Gaethje via TKO at 3:57 of the third round

STAR RATING: (****) One night after Bellator had one of their best fights ever, the WSOF may have had their best in this one. That was thrilling and competitive from start to finish, with both guys absorbing some ridiculous punishment only to continue fighting on. That it ended off brutal leg kicks and not a straight up knockout is incredible, but give Palomino a ton of credit for the offense he was able to put out in this one before the finish. Have to be concerned for the long term future of both guys after a fight like that, but it was one hell of a scrap here tonight.

-That's the event for tonight! Thanks for following along with another entertaining night of fights. We move ahead to an absolutely packed month of April, starting next weekend with a mid-day event from the UFC in Fairfax, Va., on Fox Sports 1!
