WORLD SERIES OF FIGHTING 16
DECEMBER 13, 2014
LIVE FROM SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA
The WSOF goes head to head with the UFC once again tonight, with two title fights set for their broadcast on NBCSN. We'll have live round by round coverage of tonight's title fights as they air, so tune in here to follow along!
TITLE FIGHT ONE: RICK GLENN VS. LANCE PALMER (FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP)
- Rick Glenn has a 7 inch height advantage, and a 6 inch reach advantage. Glenn comes in on a long 13-fight winning streak. This will be his first title defense since winning the tile earlier this year.
- Dan Stell is the referee for this fight.
ROUND ONE: No strikes landed in the first 45 seconds until Glenn lands a soft leg kick. Palmer responds with a fine left hook to the ear of Rick Glenn. Two minutes in. Palmer tries to get inside behind a left hand but Glenn shrugs him off. Palmer is coming up a couple inches short on his subsequent overhand left attempts. I don't think Glenn has landed a punch yet, and only a couple of soft front kicks. One minute left. Palmer lands to the body, but takes a couple punches for his efforts. Left hand fro Glenn. Glenn lands a body kick, but Palmer takes him down off of it. Closed guard. Glenn i active on the bottom and gets out once he grabbed for an armbar. 10-9 Palmer Boring round.
ROUND TWO: Hard left from Palmer. Glenn is moving backwards and gets kicked in the face. Palmer is throwing bazookas. Most are missing, though, and Glenn is shaking it off. He's dropping his hands and taunting Palmer, but he's definitely trying to psych himself up. Palmer backs off and starts to circle. Quite the 30 seconds. Palmer shoots from a mile away and gets the takedown in the middle of the cage. Palmer is landing to the ribs, but Glenn is doing a good job keeping Palmer chest to chest. Palmer is content throwing right hands to the ribs of Glenn as Glenn uses both hands to keep Palmer's head down. Glenn is now trying to slither out, and he's up with 1:45 left. Glenn is continuing to come forward but isn't landing anything of note. Palmer shoots for a double and gets behind Glenn, taking his back standing. I think some of the lights just went out because they're grappling in some major shadows right now. Palmer releases his hold of Glenn. Glenn lunges forward with a left, finding air once again. 20-18 Glenn Glenn looks lost.
ROUND THREE: Glenn is throwing left and right hooks, landing sporadically. Palmer shoots from a mile away after eating a few in a row, but gets stuffed. Palmer tries again and gets the takedown, landing in side control. Easily to mount. Palmer loses the mount when trying to posture up. Sow scramble from Glenn, and Palmer works for a guillotine. It's not really there, but he gets on Glenn's back. Palmer's working really hard to keep Glenn from rolling onto his back. Glenn's mounted, while on his side. Palmer lands a few pitter patter shots to the back of Glenn's head; apparently legal in Cali. Palmer is smothering him, and gets the choke in place. Glenn insta-taps, and Lance Palmer is the new WSOF Featherweight Champion.
WINNER: Lance Palmer by submission at 3:09 in the third round.
STAR RATING: (**) Nothing special. Rick Glenn made Lance Palmer look like a world-beater, and Palmer made Glenn look like the 232'nd best FW in the world. The truth, for both men, lies somewhere in the middle.
TITLE FIGHT TWO: ROUSIMAR PALHARES VS. JON FITCH (WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP)
- Fitch comes in with a 5 inch height advantage and a 5.5 inch reach advantage.
- Just like in the co-main event, the fighter entrances happened during the commercial breaks. I think they cut one of the undercard fights as the basketball game running long must have screwed with the clock. But hey, anything that lessens the time I have to listen to Kenny and Bas, the better.
- Jon Fitch dyed his hair black. Worst dye job ever.
ROUND ONE: Fitch lands to the body early, so he's already outperformed Rick Glenn. Fitch is pumping the jab, and lands a hard standing elbow. Palhares gets in on a single and drops to the mat. He's got the heel hooked. Not what Fitch wants. kneebar attempt and Fitch taps. Palhares held on to it a couple seconds too long, of course. Fitch is writhing in agony. PALHARES NEEDS TO BE ARRESTED!
WINNER: Rousimar Palhares by submission (kneebar) at 1:30 in the first round.
STAR RATING: (**+) It is what it is. Fitch is done. Palhares is a sociopath.
