By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief The rumored bout between Nick Diaz and Joe Riggs for the August 15th Strikeforce on Showtime event will be coming to fruition as a bout for a new Strikeforce Welterweight Title according to a report from MMAWeekly.com.
The bout will be a rematch from both fighters' UFC days, a fight that Riggs won via decision. The two then infamously got into a brawl at the hospital after the bout that needed to be broken up by security.
Riggs had been trying to get a fight with Jake Shields, but Shields had turned it down. He also mistakenly believed he had broken both hands in his bout with Phil Baroni, but when checked by doctor's realized it was just bruised bones and he'll be ok to fight.
Diaz has been on a tear as of late, picking up wins over Frank Shamrock and Scott Smith in catch weight bouts. This fight will be the fourth title fight for Strikeforce on this August 15th card. Alistair Overeem defends the Heavyweight Title against Fabricio Werdum and Josh Thomson defends his Lightweight Belt against Gilber Melendez as well before the main event.
The show airs live on showtime from the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA, headlined by the Women's 145 lb Title bout between Gina Carano and Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos.
Penick's Analysis: The addition of the Title makes this an infinitely more interesting bout than it would have been otherwise. I'm surprised Strikeforce is packing this card as much as they are, because unless they're planning on having more time in between this card and the next one they're kind of out of main event type fights for a bit. Still, they're giving fans one hell of a fight card and you can't complain about that.
