The World Series of Fighting is heading to Connecticut this October, and they've revealed that former UFC title challengers Jon Fitch and Yushin Okami will square off in a main event fight at WSOF 24 at Foxwoods.
The bout was confirmed by WSOF President Ray Sefo via a report from MMAJunkie.com, and the October 17 card on NBCSN will also feature Heavyweight Champion Blagoi Ivanov against Derrick Mehmen, as well as lightweight Nick Newell against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
Okami is dropping to the welterweight division after a loss to Dave Branch in November last year. Fitch as well needs to get back on track, having lost to WSOF Champ Rousimar Palhares in his last fight earlier this year.
Ivanov captured the WSOF Title in his organizational debut, submitting Smealinho Rama in June. Mehmen, who lost to Rama in his last WSOF appearance in October, enters the title fight off a win outside the organization over Strikeforce vet Brett Rogers in Abu Dhabi in March.
Penick's Analysis: Fitch-Okami is an interesting fight. Both were released from the UFC under similar circumstances, and have received many of the same criticisms of their respective styles over the years. Still, both remain very good fighters capable of beating many they'd be put in against, so it should be a competitive fight to see which of them has more left at this point in their careers.
