The WSOF has lost one of the reasons to tune in to their August 1 card, as Tyrone Spong has suffered an injury, taking him out of the WSOF 22 event in Las Vegas.
According to a report from MMAFighting.com, Spong has suffered a sprained MCL and is battling tendinitis in his knee, which will keep him out until September or October. Spong's been out of MMA for quite some time, as he broke his leg last year in a kickboxing bout.
With Spong out, his originally scheduled opponent, Mike Kyle, will take on Thiago Silva, who makes his second WSOF appearance after a first round TKO loss to late replacement Teddy Holder in May.
The WSOF 22 event will air live on NBCSN, and will be headlined by the WSOF Welterweight Title bout between Rousimar Palhares and Jake Shields.
Penick's Analysis: I was looking forward to that fight, and even though I would have been watching it on DVR following UFC 190 either way, it was infinitely more interesting than Silva-Kyle will be. This is a significant loss to a card that is already up against the wall as far as viewership will be concerned due to it coming head to head against a Ronda Rousey fight.
