The World Series of Fighting confirmed on Monday that they've granted Strawweight Champ Jessica Aguilar her release, admitting a lack of top competition available to her in their organization.
"We wish Jessica all the best, and hope that she will achieve everything she wants to in her career that is blossoming," said WSOF President Ray Sefo in a press release. "We sat down with Jessica and her manager and we all agreed that she needs to move on to a place where she can compete against the best 115 pound women in the world.
"We have an incredible and fast-growing roster of world-class athletes at WSOF, but we do not have the best fighters in this particular women's weight class, so it was time to shake hands and amicably part ways."
Aguilar last fought in November of last year, defeating Kalindra Faria to defend her title a second time. While she hasn't yet signed with the UFC, she said on Monday that her goal now is to become the UFC Champion.
Penick's Analysis: It was obvious when the UFC announced they were bringing in the strawweight division that the level of talent available for Aguilar to face outside of the Octagon was not going to be great. Good on WSOF for recognizing and acknowledging that fact and letting her go on her way to hopefully get her run in the UFC.
