Cris "Cyborg" Justino returns to the cage later this month for the first time in over a year and a half, and while she's defending her Invicta FC Featherweight Title at Invicta FC 11, a fight with Ronda Rousey remains the eventual goal.
Invicta FC President Shannon Knapp thinks that fight is closer to happening than at any point in the past, and said this week fans shouldn't give up on it coming to fruition.
"I can't really say that it will happen this year," Knapp said in an interview with MMAFighting.com. "But what I can tell you is the fans should not give up, because this fight is closer than it has ever been - ever. If it's gonna happen, I think we're gonna see it happen possibly by the end of this year or first quarter of next."
Cyborg has to defeat Charmaine Tweet on Feb. 27, then show she can make 135 lbs., but after that it remains a possibility.
Penick's Analysis: Can Cyborg make 135 lbs.? That's really the only question standing in the way of that fight happening. If she can, the fight will happen. If she can't, it won't. That said, the UFC is committed to it, so that should give her added motivation to make that attempt, because they'll put the fight together if she can get there.
