By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief From the "It's About Damn Time" files, multiple published reports are stating that the 145 lb Women's Strikeforce Title bout between Gina Carano and Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos will be contested with the same time limits that the men fight with. That's right, Carano and Cyborg get five full five minute rounds for their much anticipated Championship bout.
Until now, all women's MMA bouts have been contested in three minute rounds. It's not clear whether this bout will constitute an overhaul of the current round format going forward or if it's a one time deal for this fight.
Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg, airs live on Showtime on August 15th at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, CA. The card also features a Lightweight Championship bout between Gilbert Melendez and Josh Thomson and Alistair Overeem is expected to defend his Heavyweight Title.
Penick's Analysis: This is great news, as there is truly no real reason why women's mixed martial artists should not be allowed the same amount of time for their bouts as their male counterparts. Hopefully this can be made a permanent change for women's fights going forward. Either way, we're going to have plenty of time for this fight to live up to the hype now with five full rounds with the an equal amount of time to the other title fights on the card.
