Cris Cyborg has officially given up on the idea of making bantamweight. In interviews with Tatame in Brazil and Guilherme Cruz at MMAFighting.com, she made it clear she's not going to make the effort, as she doesn't feel the UFC or Ronda Rousey has done anything to push for that fight either.
"I can't. From now on, I will only fight at my weight or in a catchweight," Cyborg said to Tatame. "I haven't fought in a long time and that's why I want to go back to my division."
"I realized I'm the only one making an effort for this fight to happen," she added to Cruz. "I believe both should make an effort."
Penick's Analysis: Cyborg continues to play the victim as far as the Rousey fight is concerned, when the simple reality is the effort needed to come from her to make 135 lbs. before it was a real conversation. Rousey doesn't need to fight her to establish her legacy. Sure, Rousey fought at 145 lbs. at the outset of her career, but she doesn't anymore. She's the 135 lb. Champion, that's the division the UFC promotes, and that's the division Cyborg needed to make in order for that fight to happen. If she can't make it, fine, but she's not fully making an effort herself to have that fight happen if she isn't making 135 lbs. That's just a fact.
