36-year-old UFC vet Roan Carneiro won the one-night only tournament at Battlegrounds MMA "ONE" on Friday night on pay-per-view, defeating fellow UFC vet Brock Larson in the finals by decision to close out a grueling night.
However, after winning the $50,000 prize for his three victories, Carneiro was allegedly shaken down by the Oklahoma athletic commission for a large chunk of it.
Oklahoma commission took $15,000 from @jucao saying he was "late" for a physical. They robbed him! We are fighting this!
The one-night only tournament featured Jim Ross and Chael Sonnen on commentary. The full results of the pay-per-view card are below:
* Roan Carneiro def. Brock Larson via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) - Tourney Finals
* Chris Gutierrez def. Tyler Shinn via split decision (29-28, 27-30, 29-28)
* Brock Larson def. Joe Ray via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) - Tourney Semifinal

* Zac Church def. Ryan Haynes via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
* Niko Koliastasis def. Wayne Cole via submission (rear-naked choke) at 1:32 of the first round
* Joe Ray def. Luigi Fioravanti via TKO at 2:39 of the first round - Tourney Quarterfinal
* Brock Larson def. Cody McKenzie via submission (arm-triangle choke) at 1:43 of the second round - Tourney Quarterfinal
* Roan Carneiro def. Randall Wallace via submission (armbar) at 3:29 of the first round - Tourney Quarterfinal
* Trey Houston def. Jesse Taylor via submission (armbar) at 2:10 of the first round - Tourney Quarterfinal
Penick's Analysis: The tournament format doesn't lend itself to great action down the stretch, as fighters get worn out from fighting multiple times. That's what happened for both Larson and Carneiro, but especially Larson, as it became a bit of a battle of attrition. That said, it was an interesting experiment. Hopefully Carneiro has some recourse to get his money back, because if the commission actually did just take the money from him last night (he was paid in cash by the promotion in-cage), then they flat out robbed him without any process, and with no warning. Regardless, the excuse that he was "late" for his medicals is asinine to begin with, and a $15,000 fine out of a $50,000 purse is just grossly over the top.
