Georgi Karakhanyan lost the World Series of Fighting Featherweight Championship to Rick Glenn in June at WSOF 10, as a rib injury wouldn't allow him to come out for the third round.
The injury happened in the first round as he was attempting a takedown, and as such he's extremely frustrated with the loss.
"I couldn't do anything about it," Karakhanyan said of the injury in an interview with MMAJunkie.com. "It was something I couldn't control. I tried my best in the second round, but it didn't work out, and the doctor's had to stop it."
"It happened right when I took him down and I was passing his half guard. I could feel something was wrong with my ribs. When we landed, maybe I landed in an awkward way or his knee hit my ribs. But as soon as I was going for a guillotine, I was having problems breathing, so I went to the mount and took his back, and as soon as I took his back, I could tell something was wrong. I was breathing very heavy, and it was very hard, so I went for an armbar, and I couldn't finish it because every time I tried to hip up, it was just not letting me breath."
Karakhanyan feels the injury is what took him out of the fight, not Glenn's performance. Because of that, he doesn't hold a high opinion of the new Champ.
"I don't think he's that good," Karakhanyan said of Glenn. "I think he should have finished me in the first round. He had his chance. He didn't finish me, and going into the third round, it was hard to breath, and the doctor said, 'You can't fight.'
"I feel like I was dominating," he continued. "It's something that's very frustrating. Even going out in the second round, I wanted to finish him. I've been in fights where I was at 50 percent, and I came out with the victory. So I was thinking I was going to catch him, and it would be the same thing."
"... I just don't think he's that tough. When you look at a fighter's face and you hit him as hard as you can, you can tell if he's going to come back. He's not one of those fighters. All I've got to do it punch him until he goes out, so that's my opinion about him."
Penick's Analysis: While there's certainly something to be said of the injury, Glenn's comeback remains impressive. A rematch would be welcome because the injury was absolutely a factor in that finish. Karakhanyan's a very good featherweight, and I think Glenn himself is a very talented young fighter. This is just going to boost a bit of a rivalry between the two of them, and the rematch should be fun whenever it happens.
