The MMA world lost another veteran fighter this week, as Brazilian jiu jitsu instructor and two-time Bellator competitor Joe Camacho passed away on Monday morning in California. He was 41.
According to a report from the LA Times, paramedics rushed Camacho to the Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina on Monday morning, but despite the performance of CPR, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Though several of his friends have commented online that he suffered a heart attack, the cause of death has not yet officially been determined pending a report from the coroner's office.
Camacho was a jiu jitsu instructor in Los Angeles, and competed in MMA from 1999 on, with his most recent and final fight coming in November at Bellator 106.
UFC bantamweight Urijah Faber was a friend of Camacho's, and commented on his passing in an interview Monday with MMAJunkie.com.
"It's really unfortunate," Faber commented. "He was such a great guy, a positive guy, and loved the fight game. He wasn't coming off a bunch of wins, by any means, but the guy loved the sport, and he was a true mixed martial artist."
"Love goes out to his family. It's unfortunate that the MMA community lost another one of its soldiers. He was a true fighter, man. It's a sad day for sure."
Penick's Analysis: This is more sad news in MMA with another fighter falling apparently to an issue of the heart just a short time after Shane del Rosario. Our thoughts and condolences go out to Camacho's family, friends, students, and all who have been affected by his passing.
