By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief Tim Sylvia wants to fight in Japan on either the K-1 "Dynamite" New Year's Eve card or the January 4th World Victory Road Sengoku event, according to a report on Sherdog.com. Unconcerned about not having an opponent, Sylvia is quoted as saying "I don’t think anyone ever knows until about a week before they fight [in Japan]."
He will not be a part of Affliction's second event in January after being destroyed by Fedor Emelianenko at the inaugural Affliction event in July, but he is looking ahead to who he would like to fight: Ken Shamrock. In the article, Sylvia says "I was supposed to fight Ken Shamrock December 20, but it’s been postponed to February now...He’s a free agent. I was supposed to fight him in a small show called XP3 Promotions. I believe in Texas, but it’s postponed to February now."
And while Shamrock's manager told Sherdog the proposed fight was rejected, XP3 told the site that it had "written confirmation from both parties that they are currently in negotiations for the bout."
The story finishes with Sylvia's thoughts on that potential match up, "He’s a Hall of Famer. He’s a legend. To progress your career you always have to fight somebody like that...I don’t know if he’s a stepping stone or anything, but he’s been on some of the same cards I’ve been on and he’s been highlighted over me, so I want to let people that I am better than this guy and there’s no reason he should have been highlighted over me."
Penick's Analysis: That last quote from Sylvia just got me. If Sylvia honestly believes he is going to make people believe he should have been highlighted over Shamrock back when they were on the same cards by beating the Ken Shamrock of today, he's got some serious mental issues. This would be more along the lines of a "let's see who's the least washed up" contest were it to take place. Sylvia will prove absolutely nothing if he faces Shamrock and beats him, as there are numerous other names that have felled that beast over the last few years. On that same note, if Shamrock were to beat Sylvia, it would further damage what name Sylvia has left as a fighter. This would be a lose-lose situation for Sylvia in my estimation.
