Williams' MMA News Blog: Bright New Beginning? Fedor to Fight on January Affliction Show; "Groundbreaking" Announcement Still to Come

Affliction COO Michael Cohen told NBCSports.com that Fedor Emelianenko will return for the promotion at its newly re-scheduled January 2009 show. Emelianenko was originally slated to face Andrei Arlovski on the card when it was still slated for October of this year, but an Emelianenko hand injury caused the main event to be changed to Arlovski vs Josh Barnett. Cohen says no opponent for Emelianenko is official yet, but one assumes Arlovski and Barnett are the two front runners.
In a good sign that he is not consulting with former WCW head honcho Eric Bischoff on how to (mis)hype events, other comments from Cohen indicate that Emelianenko's return is not the announcement that he claims will "change the world of mixed martial arts."
An interesting excerpt from the story:
"When asked whether the show would still air on pay-per-view, Cohen responded, 'No comment,' and would not elaborate further, except to say, 'Unlike others who call for a press conference for groundbreaking MMA news, the Affliction announcement will truly change the sport, and not through a toy deal.'"
