Alex Williams' first contribution to the sport came in the form of the MMA simulation game Strike Or Submit. A PhD student in political science, Alex prefers to play sports like tennis. His forays into training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu have been both brief and painful. Here he brings to you, the MMATorch reader, his first MMATorch Blog entry.
-In his July 8 piece, Shawn Ennis wrote that most people in the MMA community are not on board with more weight classes being added to the sport. Fortunately for Shawn, myself and anyone else opposed to them, the major power brokers seem to be part of that majority.
First, there was the point noted in the initial Sherdog story on the ABC's recommendations that the Nevada and California athletic commissions had skipped the pertinent ABC meeting.
Next came Dana White's statement to Dave Meltzer that he was opposed to the new weight classes. Still, Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez worried on the July 6 Observer audio show (subscription required) that other commissions, like New Jersey's, might agree to the changes. However, Meltzer as well as MMAJunkie have since reported that the New Jersey and Ohio athletic commissions are also against the proposed weight classes. Without the UFC or the four biggest states for MMA supporting the weight classes, mainstream MMA looks safe from them for the time being.
