So, um, we suck at this.

33 people submitted entries for the MMA Torch UFC 125 Picks Contest. Exactly two people managed to finish with a record better than .500. Of course we’re now doing confidence points, so maybe we did better with our confidence picks, right?

Wrong. Exactly two people, the same two people, managed to get even half of the 66 confidence points that were available.

Well, maybe we’re degenerate gamblers who know how to make money, rather than handicappers who know who’s going to win. Maybe that’s the story of UFC 125.

Or maybe not. Of the 35 Betting Game entries, nine people turned a profit, and seven people lost their entire $1000 budget. And get this, it gets even worse. There were 11 people whose only payout was getting a refund from a bet placed on either Frank Edgar or Maynard.

So that reminds me; before we get to results, we need to go over some housekeeping here. What happens in the event of a draw?

Impact of A Draw On Confidence Picks: Zero points awarded.
Impact of A Draw On Straight Bets: You get your money back.
Impact of A Draw On A Parlay Bet: The draw gets deleted. If you put Edgar or Maynard into a three-team parlay, it turns into a 2-team parlay. If you had Edgar or Maynard in a two-team parlay, the bet becomes a straight bet on the other guy.

So now, back to the misery. I failed to mention above that we suck at parlay bets. 29 players made parlay bets. Not one person had a successful parlay bet. One person had a three-fighter parlay bet with Edgar in it. One person had a two-fighter parlay with Edgar in it. One person had a successful two-fighter parlay. That’s it.

So, here’s hoping we do better at UFC 126. How could we not?

CONFIDENCE GAME RESULTS

Kubi was the defending champion. I was the challenger.
And now Rich Hansen is the Champion.

Kubi laid an egg. A big steaming turd of an egg. People, Kubi laid a Gobbledygooker of an egg. A 2-8-1 record earned Kubi a total of 16 points. Thank Roberts and Tavares for keeping you from another type of egg. A Goose Egg.

In case you think I’m gloating now that I am your champion, and why would you ever think such a thing of me?, I only managed to go 5-5-1 for a score of 25 points.

But, 25 is good enough for me to enter UFC 126 as the Confidence Game Champion. And at UFC 126, I will be facing off against someone who goes by the pseudonym 'Skarz' Skarz dominated the pool by scoring 41 points, with an 8-2-1 record. His top two picks both lost, or else he could have had a very high score indeed. My work will be cut out for me at UFC 126.

BETTING CONTEST RESULTS

We have a dynasty. Six-time defending champion Cambo "Rambo" Nelson has extended his reign of terror to an amazing seven defenses. Nelson earned the win by placing tandem $200 bets on Dustin Poirier and Jacob Volkmann, for a total payout of $1190.

Nelson's $1190 payout earned him a victory with a margin of... $1190 dollars, as the challender Hans “Baby Snorlax” Hoehn did in fact score a goose egg. Oh, the pain, the shame.

Nelson's next victim opponent at UFC 126 will be someone named Avery. (Note, I want last names from now on, people!) Avery was the only bettor who was fortunate enough to double his money at UFC 125. Avery's $2002.50 payout was accomplished by betting $300 on Brian Stann, $250 on Jacob Volkmann, and $200 on a Volkmann/Edgar two-fighter parlay. As explained above, that parlay on Volkmann/Edgar became an additional $200 straight bet on Volkmann. Good luck, Avery. You're gonna need it.
