Well the best UFC event of 2010 is in the books, which means its time to take a look at what happened in our own battles here at the Torch. Just as UFC 113 wasn't without a bit of controversy, we dealt with some of our own. Dablackpanther, #1 contender for Jamie Penick's betting title, no-showed his title shot, so the crack went to next-best finisher from UFC 112 Kubi.
Never one to take a contest off, Kubi breezed past longtime champ Penick to capture the crown. In a night were almost everyone turned a profit (not that hard when the underdog wins 6 of 11 fights), Penick only managed a $200 bet on Joey Beltran, while Kubi more than doubled his money to top all bettors, the pool included. Congrats to Kubi for winning the Betting Title in an impromptu match, but his work was far from done.
As good of a night as it was for the bettors, it was a rough night for predictions. On a night when only five competitors TOTAL were above .500 on their picks, Prediction Champ Fernando Trejo's 6-5 mark was respectable, but he was cruised past by #1 contender Kubi's 8-3. Big time congrats to Kubi, who becomes one of only a handful to hold both titles simultaneously.
In the prediction pool, your's truly's 7-4 mark was good enough to beat out the field without even going to tie-breakers. A hearty pat on my own back. Kubi, your reign ends on May 29th. Write that down.
In the betting pool is where we had our second bit of controversy. Shaun Godric Louis submitted bets of $500 on Jeremy Stephens, $300 on Shogun, $200 on Jonathon Goulet, and $100 on Joe Doerksen. For all you match aficionados out there, that exceeds our $1000 limit by $100. I had a decision to make. By all rights I could've disallowed his entry altogether, especially considering that I was the one who stood to benefit, as I was the next highest bettor. However, I determined that no matter where I took away $100 from his bets (the $100 on Doerksen would lower his total the most) he still would've beaten me. So I counted his bets on Stephens and Rua and there you have it. Mr. Louis is the new #1 contender to Kubi's betting title. Congrats. Full results follow...

Performer of the Night: As much as I'd like to give it to myself for my workmanlike effort in nearly capture both #1 contenderships, this one goes to Kubi. He won both titles, and left no doubt by being the top overall performer in both contests.
Goat of the Night: Brooks Rittel. The only man to lose all of his money also posted a lackluster 4-7 mark on his predictions.

"There's still a large contingent of people, that they just want to see these guys almost die, or the other guy almost die and come back, and sometimes fights are like that. Certainly they are. But sometimes you get technical masterpieces too, and to hate a beautiful, technical fight - you're not really a fight fan...
