Well we got the fairly uneventful show I was expecting out of UFC 109 on Saturday, but the results did make for some interesting outcomes here at the Torch. Both Prediction Champ Godric Louis and Betting Champ Jamie "The Boss" Penick were able to withstand their challenges from #1 contender Paul P. and retain their belts for the first time. Congrats to our champs!
In the pools is where things got interesting. With a few upsets on the card, no one was able to put up a 10-1 or 11-0 mark in the predictions, but Fernando Trejo's 9-2 was good enough to beat out a four-headed monster at 8-3 to earn the #1 contendership at UFC 110. Congrats to Trejo as he'll take on Godric Louis for the Prediction Title.
In the betting pool we had a strange dichotomy. As I said there were a few upsets. Those upsets caused nearly everyone to either make big money or no money. We had a record 14 entrants turn a profit, including four that over doubled their money, and also a record 8 people lose every dollar. In the end, it was Lightning101 who came out on top thanks to a $500 bet on Chael Sonnen and a $300 bet on Paulo Thiago. Despite making an unsuccessful $200, he nearly tripled his money and topped the rest of the field. Congrats to Lightning101, our new #1 contender for the betting title, who'll take on champ Jamie Penick at UFC 110.

Performer of the Night: Fernando Trejo. He topped the betting pool and also more than doubled his money. The most impressive thing about his bets is that he did it without betting any money on either of the big underdogs (Sonnen, Beltran) who pulled upsets. A $500 bet on Paulo Thiago didn't hurt though.
Goat of the Night: Your's truly, Matt Pelkey. Sure there were other candidates, with 8 people losing all their money and a whopping ten entrants going under .500 on their picks. And sure, my 8-3 mark on predictions was pretty nice (especially considering I picked BOTH Sonnen and Thiago to win), but notice my name doesn't appear anywhere in the betting pool. That's because I failed to make my bets before the deadline. I got lazy and lost track of time. The only reason I can even claim the 8-3 mark is because I used my picks I made on our audio preview show. Not my finest hour.

"There's still a large contingent of people, that they just want to see these guys almost die, or the other guy almost die and come back, and sometimes fights are like that. Certainly they are. But sometimes you get technical masterpieces too, and to hate a beautiful, technical fight - you're not really a fight fan...

"There was a lot of poison going on around there and I'm really disappointed because we had a good thing going. It was a good thing and I think people's egos got in the way. Well, not people just Javier, his ego got in the way, and too many cameras in the gym and him trying to build himself up and his brand, his AKA brand...
