Sep 21, 2009 - 9:33:11 AM By Matt Pelkey, MMATorch Columnist UFC 103 is in the books, and (unfortunately) we have a new champ here at the Torch. It came down to tie-breakers, but in the end #1 contender and Betting Champ Scott "The Fountain of Youth" Hart upended your's truly to capture the Prediction Championship. Both of us posted respectable 8-5 records, but it was Hart who came out on top by predicting four rounds/methods correctly to my measly two. So...congrats to Mr. Hart for winning the Prediction Title...I guess.
We had a tricky situation for the Betting Title. #1 contender Bjorn "NorwegianNightmare" Hansen submitted his predictions, but failed to submit his betting picks. Thus, we went to the next best performer from the UFC 102 contests Mikey Fritz to take on champ Scott Hart. Then in another strange turn of events, both Hart and Fritz only managed on correct bet...both on Vitor Belfort...both for $400. So as the rules go, a tie goes to the champ. So still the Betting Champ, and now a simultaneous double champ, SCOTT "THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH" HART!!!! Now THAT'S worth congratulating.
In the betting pool, one man owned the night. Rich Boles won a title race in the prediction pool, besting Brian Fuller and Dennis by tie-breakers, and then he blew the field away in the betting pool, nailing all of his bets and over doubling his money. Congrats to Boles. He'll be taking on Scott Hart for both titles at UFC 104. The results follow:
Prediction Pool:
Rich Boles 9-4 (6)
Dennis (no last name given) 9-4 (4)

Performer of the Night: Its tempting to go with Scott Hart seeing as how he defended his betting title for the fourth consecutive time and captured the prediction title from one of the toughest opponents he'll ever face, but he didn't perform exceptionally well in either contest. The award goes to Rich Boles for dominating both pools against a larger set of competition.
Goat of the Night: Four contestants were sub-.500 on their predictions, so I compared their bets. Jamie Penick turned a profit, so he's out. Same for Overkill. It came down to Nut and Frank Hyden. Nut bested Hyden by less than $9 in his bets, so this (dubious) award belongs to MMATorch's own Frank Hyden.

"There's still a large contingent of people, that they just want to see these guys almost die, or the other guy almost die and come back, and sometimes fights are like that. Certainly they are. But sometimes you get technical masterpieces too, and to hate a beautiful, technical fight - you're not really a fight fan...
Diaz has a granite chin, possesses perhaps the best recovery in the sport, his pace and conditioning are second to none and he sets records with the volume of his punches almost every time he steps into the cage. Nick Diaz is simply designed to fight the way he fights, and not many other fighters are...
"There was a lot of poison going on around there and I'm really disappointed because we had a good thing going. It was a good thing and I think people's egos got in the way. Well, not people just Javier, his ego got in the way, and too many cameras in the gym and him trying to build himself up and his brand, his AKA brand...
