Aug 11, 2009 - 7:34:16 PM By Matt Pelkey, MMATorch Columnist Well UFC 101 delivered a relatively lackluster event (other than the P4P luminaries proving their collective worth), but that doesn't mean the action wasn't fast and furious here at the Torch. Your's truly was able to successfully defend my prediction title, but to say I did it by the skin of my teeth would be an understatement. It was actually only on a technicality that I was able to do so. Both myself and #1 contender Overkill only managed a sub-par 5-6 record on the night. In addition, we both managed three tie-breaking points. As ashamed as I am to say it, the title stays with the champ in case of a tie, so still your prediction champion...Matt Pelkey. Ho-hum.
On the betting side it was nearly as close. Defending Champ Scott "The Fountain of Youth" Hart was able to hold onto his belt yet again, outlasting #1 contender Brian Fuller by less than $50. He'll move on to UFC 102 to take on former champ Rich Boles, who held off stern challenges from Jamie Penick and Makana Atisanoe to top the betting pool. Congrats to the new #1 contender and the still champ!
In the betting pool, former champ Jamie "The Boss" Penick bested all predictors, going 8-3 on the night to capture the #1 contendership. He'll move on to UFC 102 to battle myself yet again. In case you don't remember, I took his title in an epic clash just last month at UFC 100. I guess we're doing this again, but with the roles reversed. Bring your A game Penick. You'll need it.

Performer of the Night: Jamie Penick. The Boss turned right back around after losing his title at UFC 100 and earned another title shot. He was also less than $30 away from winning both pools and challenging for both belts at UFC 102. Not a bad night.
Goat of the Night: Nick Underwood. Under .500 on his picks and a goose-egg on his bets. Better luck next time Nick.

"There's still a large contingent of people, that they just want to see these guys almost die, or the other guy almost die and come back, and sometimes fights are like that. Certainly they are. But sometimes you get technical masterpieces too, and to hate a beautiful, technical fight - you're not really a fight fan...
Diaz has a granite chin, possesses perhaps the best recovery in the sport, his pace and conditioning are second to none and he sets records with the volume of his punches almost every time he steps into the cage. Nick Diaz is simply designed to fight the way he fights, and not many other fighters are...
"There was a lot of poison going on around there and I'm really disappointed because we had a good thing going. It was a good thing and I think people's egos got in the way. Well, not people just Javier, his ego got in the way, and too many cameras in the gym and him trying to build himself up and his brand, his AKA brand...
