BELLATOR 138
JUNE 19, 2015
LIVE FROM ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI

- I don't know about you, but I'm geeked up to see the clash between the guy who beat Houston Alexander and the guy who lost to, well, lost to everybody!

FIGHT ONE: MICHAEL CHANDLER VS. DEREK CAMPOS (LIGHTWEIGHT)

- Chandler is fighting in an arena 25 miles away from his childhood home. Chandler also attended Missouri, so the crowd is definitely on his side tonight. That said, his pop was pretty quiet. Word on the street is that Bellator sold about 7000 tickets going in to Friday afternoon.

ROUND ONE: Quick touch of gloves and we're off. Couple of kicks early from Campos, and a few pawing jabs from Chandler. Chandler lands a hard jab and a couple right hands. Campos is already way too slow, and he's going to be in trouble if this keeps up. Chandler drops him with a right hand and is pounding away with hammerfists. Massive elbows on the canvas. Campos gets him in guard, but he's still getting poinded. Chandler postures up and Campos explodes back to his feet. Where... he continues to get lit up from Chandler's boxing. Belly to back suplex takedown from Chandler. Chandler is on his back looking for the choke. He's got it. Campos is staring at the ceiling. It's over. Very impressive from Chandler, until you look at who he beat.

WINNER: Michael Chandler by submission at 2:17 of the first round (rear naked choke)

STAR RATING: (**) Campos looked awful. He literally, and I do mean literally, looked like he was fighting with his eyes closed. He didn't see any punches Chandler was throwing. Chandler is fast, but come on, son. At least see one punch. This tells us nothing about Chandler, but it was fun. I just want him to fight a non-mannequin next time.

- Major pacing issues. The show has been on for 38 minutes. 2 minutes of fighting. Pathetic.

FIGHT TWO: DANIEL STRAUS VS. HENRY CORRALES (FEATHERWEIGHT)

- Straus made weight without cutting his hair, which is nice for him.

ROUND ONE: Straus ducks under a Leonard Garcia-esque hook and gets the takedown. Corrales pops back up but is being pressed against the cage, eating knees to his thighs. Corrales reverses position, and from this angle you can see the huge size disparity in play. Straus explodes off the cage and trips Corrales down. He gets back up after about 20 seconds of (in)action. Straus is determined to wear Corrales out. That's what Scott Coker likes. Grinding against the cage, yay! Corrales turns and grabs a single, and promptly does nothing with it. Yay! Straus starts to open up with a flurry of punches that move Corrales' body to the canvas. Corrales eats a bunch of punches as he gets back up, and eats a massive right hook. Corrales has no defense. He's like Leonard Garcia's untalented cousin. Corrales eats a 1-2. He's doomed. He cant see the punches coming. He can't move his feet. If Straus had better finishing instincts, this would be over (mercifully). Now that Straus has let Corrales off the hook, he gets a takedown and does nothing with it until the final second where he slaps on a tight guillotine. 10-9 Straus

ROUND TWO: First round could've been a 10-8. Straus landed 28 power strikes in the first. Corrales landed 1. Transparent booking reigns. Corrales is throwing kicks. They aren't hurting. Straus is fighting very patiently, or tentatively if you're a cynic. Tentatively it is. Straus deserves a good taunting on Twitter if he lets Corrales come back and KO him late. Straus has a mssive size advantage and had all his success in the first, so what does he do in the second? He fihgts at distance in the middle of the cage. Fortunately Corrales is dead meat and gets dropped by a right hand. Straus takes his back and slaps on a rear naked choke. He doesn't quite have it under the chin though, but he has two more minutes to find it. He lets Corrales turn and goes for an arm triangle. It's very poor, and Corrales escapes. Well, he escaped the choke and in now mounted. He loses mount due to the cage, but gets a front headlock. Make that a guillotine. Make that a wrap. Corrales taps.

WINNER: (**-) Daniel Straus by submission at 3:47 of round two (announced as a guillotine choke, but it looked like a ninja choke)

STAR RATING: That was... Look. If you're highly talented and you fight for Bellator it's because you want to be the big fish in a small pond. Plenty f fighters have Bibiano Fernandes Disease, which is where you (GASP) value money and safety over hubris and competition. Good on Straus, and Chandler, and in the WSOF Moraes, Gaethje, and Branch for ducking the best competition in order to have a functioning brain for a longer amount of their lives. But let's not pretend that you can be considered an elite fighter when you're fighting tomato cans.

- What do you do to celebrate fifty minutes of non-fighting in the first hour? Show a Justin Lawrence fight. YAY PACING!

- The fight sucked. The finish was not extraordinary. Lawrence wins. Maybe they're setting him up for Straus? Maybe they want to stretch the broadcast as long as possible because it'll draw better ratings than the upcoming Cops rerun?

- After the Lawrence fight they went to commmercial. Came back to show every fighter in the hosue they could find (Fedor, Lima, Nick Diaz, Brooks). No pop at all for Fedor. Up yours St. Louis. You deserve the Blues. They then went to a David Rickels piece where they're now showing all of his past caveman entrances.

- Seriously. They're promoting the shit out of the 232nd best fighter in his weight class.

- And now commercials.

- Back from commercial. Canned interviews with Charles and Lashley, and back to commercials.

- It's 20 minutes after the hour. It's been 35 minutes since the last live fight ended. And we still have 2 ring entrances and fighter announcements from Michael Williams to go.

FIGHT THREE: BOBBY LASHLEY VS. DAN CHARLES (HEAVYWEIGHT)

- Bobby "Chesty Muscles Galore" somehow only weighs 239. Unbelievable.

- No 39 year old man should go by the moniker "Bobby."

ROUND ONE: Charles gets taken down immediately. And that was while he was all busy hopping around and circling and riding a bike. He got up with no damage, though. Charles hits a stiff kick to the knee of Lashley. Lashley shoots and scoops Charles down to the mat. He gets the back as Charles tries to get up. Charles on one knee with Lashley on his back. Belly back suplex, but Charles gets back to the same one-knee position as before. Lashley goes to the side and lands knees to the thigh of Charles. Charles gets warned for grabbing the fence, and then does it again. More knees to the thigh. More fence grabbing. Another takedown. Another back to the feet. Another fence grab. And another fence grab. And more knees to the thigh. Another fan changing the channel. Another fence grab. Another warning from McCarthy. Lashley goes off script and lands four punches to the ear. Foot stomp from Lashley. CHAD GRIGGS, WE MISS YOU! Lashley with a weak suplex, but it gets Charles down on all fours. Lashley with some stiff punches to the ear. Charles gets back to his feet with Lashley on his back. More knees to the thigh. Lashley fails to hit a belly to back suplex. They're hard to hit when John Cena does jump up in the air for you. 10-9 Lashley

ROUND TWO: Charles throws a hook kick. The air five feet from Lashley's head is in pain. Lashley catches a kick and takes Charles down. Posisble triangle from Charles, but Lashley powerboms his way out of it. He's on Charles' back and is punching away. Charles grabs the cage and gets to his feet. McCarthy clearly doesn't give a damn about enforcing rules at this point of his long (too long) career. Takedown. Pop up. Knees to thigh. Suplex. Charles grabbed the fence while in mid air, but it didn't stop Lashley. Lashley pounding. Charles gets to his feet. Grabs the fence. McCarthy slaps him, but doesn't take a point. Charles grabs the fence. McCarthy tells him not to do it. Takedown. Charles grabs fence to get to standing. McCarthy sees and ignores. Lashley suplexes Charles while Charles holds the fence, while McCarthy watches it happen. Lashley pounds ear. Charles covers up. This is just so freaking bad. Charles is just eating punches. It's over. Mercifully.

WINNER: Bobby Lashley by TKO at 4:14 of the second round

STAR RATING: (0*) Every time Bobby Lashley fights, you can count on it being awful. He can't fight, and as long as Bellator mistakenly believes he's a draw, he will continue to face useless tomato cans. I think Charles got away with 30 fence grabs. McCarthy should retire if he doesn't want to do his damn job.

FIGHT FOUR: PATRICIO "PITBULL" FREIRE VS. DANIEL WEICHEL (FEATHERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP)

- The only meaningful fight on Bellator's second "tentpole" event of 2015. Not that I remember the first, mind you.

ROUND ONE: Weichel is the bigger fighter, but Pitbull is more thickly muscled. Mutual respect for the first minute plus. Two minutes in. Nothing of note so far. Pitbull looking for the angles and lands a right uppercut. Follows with a left hook. Everytime Weichel comes in behind the jab Pitbull throws a flurry to keep Weichel at bay. Nice 1-2 from Pitbull. Weichel needs to get more busy. Weichel hits a flash takedown. Pitbull back up immediately. One minute remains. Pitbull complaining that he got hit in the bakc of the head. McCarthy warns Dan Charles not to grab the fence. Sorry. Cut and paste error there. Left hook from Pitbull. Crowd is restless. Pitbull shoots a single, lets it go. Weichel almost dropped Pitbull with a big right. He's going in for the kill on the dazed champion as the round ends. Weichel thought he won the fight. He didn't realize that it was just the end of the round. 10-9 Weichel Due to the last 5 seconds. Pittbull is in a haze.

ROUND TWO: Weichel charges forward, but doesn't throw. Weichel is so nice to let Pitbull get his wits back. How sporting of him. Weichel comes forward to attack and... Weichel just got knocked with one punch. Yup. that just happened. Daniel Weichel is a moron.

WINNER: Patricio Freiere by KO at 0:32 of round two (punch).

STAR RATING: (***) The fight was no good, but the last three seconds of round one and all of round two were compelling theater. And it was a left hook that turned out Weichel's lights. The right hand was superfluous. Weichel let him off the hook when he did nothing at the beginning of round 2.

- Going to commercial. Will be back about quarter after. The broadcast window goes until the top of the hour. How are they going to fill, fill fill?

- Scott Coker with a major announcement after the commercial.

- SPOILER ALERT - McGeary vs. Tito on 9.19 in San Jose. Vassel, Lawal, Newton, Davis in a on night tournament on the same card. also a Glory ring will be set up, and both Paul Daley and Joe Schilling will be kickboxing.

- Fill THAT, Bellator.

- Scott Coker raises the ante by showing an Adam Cella fight. Nice to see he's recovered from the Uriah Hall spin kick thing.

- It's 48 minutes after the hour. Shamrock just entered the cage, led there by Road Warrior Animal. There will be at least a 35 minute break between co-main and main events.

- And why in the hell if MMA royalty Ken shamrock walking to the cage first?

- Brian Ebersole may have retired, but his chest harrow lives on, on the chest of Kevin Ferguson.

MAIN EVENT FIGHT FIVE: KIMBO SLICE VS. KEN SHAMROCK (HEAVYWEIGHT CATCHWEIGHT)

- Shamrock weighed in at 204.4 pounds, so this is officially a catchweight fight.

- STOP GRABBING THE CAGE, DAN CHARLES!

- Good staredown. Kimbo talking. No touch of gloves.

ROUND ONE:Shamrock shoots and needs ten seconds to get Kimbo down, but he popped back up. Shamrock still holding on as they get back to standing. Pro wrestling collar and elbow hold here. Imagine that... Shamrock had better be careful to avoid an uppercut here. They disengage. EASY single leg for Shamrock, and he's on Kimbo's back. He has the rear naked choke. But After 35 seconds Kimbo powers out. Sharock was too weak to choke him out. Pathetic. Slice and Shamrock stagger to their feet, and before either of them get their legs set Kimbo drops decrepit Ken Shamrock with a right hand. Kimbo lands unanswered right hands, Shamrock falls for the last time. Before Kimbo can continue to onslaught, Shamrock turns his back on Kimbo and even McCarthy knows he has to do his job. What a disgraceful performance from Ken Shamrock.

WINNER: Kimbo Slice by TKO at 2:45 of the first round.

STAR RATING: (Whatever) - That was a work.
