BELLATOR 131
NOVEMBER 14, 2014
LIVE FROM SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA

- And on the busiest night of fights in the history of MMA, it's time to get to Bellator. We're going to cover the main event live, and then double back for the rest of the card.

- Bellator has a new stage and entrance ramp, and it looks rather impressive. What is less impressive is the awful nu-metal rap guys who are performing Bonnar's walk out. He looks like strung out James Hetfield.

- Tito walks out to some lousy Eminem, or Eminem-wannabe rap thing. I'm old, but I have taste. Taste trumps youth, you damn kids.

-Bonnar looks old. And soft. And not just when compared to his jacked up on steroids look. I mean compared to Clint Eastwood at the end of Gran Torino.

MAIN EVENT FIGHT FIVE: TITO ORTIZ VS. STEPHAN BONNAR (LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT)

- Mike Beltran is the referee. Bonnar looks dead, with no energy. He's pudgy, even.

ROUND ONE: First impressions, the lighting is much better. Good production values. Tito shoots a single and gets Bonnar down. He's on Bonnar's back throwing punches until Bonnar gets back up. Bonnar presses Ortiz into the cage. The crowd is rabidly pro-Tito, but as big of an ass as Bonnar has allowed himself to be portrayed as, I'm fine with that. Tito gets Bonnar up against the fence. Bonnar turns. Bonnar blatantly grabs the fence but still gets reversed yet again. The fighters separate. The crowd is loud and well miked, unlike the WSOF crowd earlier tonight. Man, that was a dead crowd. Tito is fighting very flat footed and is eating jabs from Bonnar. Tito shoots but can't get Bonnar down. Bonnar takes a shot to the cup and Beltran pauses the action. It was a grazing shot, but balls are balls. Bonnar is bleeding from his scalp above his left ear, and from near his right eye. Fight on. Bonnar is landing every punch he throws, as Tito isn't moving his head, and is using no angles whatsoever. big left from Bonnar. Ortiz lands a couple big shots. Bonnar retreats and circles. Bonnar's trying to win by volume, Tito's trying to land by power shot or ground and pound. Tito ducks under and gets a takedown to end the round. 10-9 Ortiz Could go either way.

ROUND TWO: there was some pushing and shoving at the end of the round, off air. It was shown as they came back from commercial. Jimmy Smith scored the first round for Ortiz, and said it was close. Ortiz landed 24-42 strikes, Bonnar landed 23-53. So yeah, close. Bonnar lands a good left hand. Bonnar with a slow developing left kick to the body. Tito shoots and gets hold of Bonnar's neck. Bonnar is able to get to standing, but takes a knee to the body. Right hand from Ortiz to the liver of Bonnar, and Bonnar is staggering like he's drunk. Bonnar is very stiff, but he's recovered quickly. Bonnar's bleeding from the nose. Ortiz finishes a takedown, but Bonnar gets dominand position and escapes to the middle of the cage. Both guys are tired. Bonnar working the body of Ortiz. Nice left hand from Bonnar. Bonnar is still landing, but he looks like a freaking Zombie. He's so so so slow. Ortiz is certainly fresher. Nice right from Bonnar. Bonnar lets Ortiz inside and he gets the takedown. Ortiz gets his back and gets both hooks in, but Bonnar wriggles free. Bonnar crawls to the fence with Ortiz on him but is admonished by the referee for grabbing the fence. The rounds end with Ortiz pressing Bonnar into the fence. 10-9 Ortiz. 20-18 Ortiz Second round was clear for Ortiz.

ROUND THREE: Ortiz gets Bonnar down and gets him on the cage. Bonnar is on all fours with Ortiz riding him. Bonnar gets to his feet, and Ortiz presses him into the cage. Ortiz with an outside trip and Bonnar is back down. Watching Bonnar continually trying to get back to his feet time and time again is like watching a fush trying to get upstream, only to be caught by a fisherman and returned to the downstream waters. Or something like that. Bonnar's up, and wriggles free this time. Back to the middle of the cage. This fight is entertaining, but just horrible. Ortiz, despite all his rage is playing not to lose. Bonnar is doing what he does, which is to fight slowly with zero skill. Nice right hand from Tito. Bonnar wades in and throws a couple uppercuts that have little effect. Tito picked up the pace to end the round. 30-27 Tito Ortiz

WINNER: Tito Ortiz by split decision (30-27, 28-29, 30-27)

STAR RATING: (0*) Neither fighter has anything left to offer. If Bellator wants to be big time, they need to stop giving shitty fighters like these guys fights. But to put them in the main event of a huge show really tells people just how crappy the promotion's overall talent base is. And that's a shame because it isn't true. There's a lot of talent here, and to let them be overmatched by a hack and a has-been? Pathetic.

- That's it for the live action. Stay with us as I'll be covering the first four fights of the card from here on out.

FIGHT ONE: MUHAMMED "KING MO" LAWAL VS. JOE VEDEPO (LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT)

- "The Doctor" Joe Vedepo makes his way in fake scrubs, accompanied by a couple of models dressed like slutty nurses on Halloween.

- Whereas Lawal is accompanied by 3 models dressed like umbrella carrying, um, slutty looking models.

ROUND ONE: Shot and takedown. 15 seconds in. We all know this is going to be a squash, the only question being how quick Lawal chooses to end it. Will he be merciful and end it fast, or cruel and let it linger to about 40 seconds into round 3. (SPOILER ALERT), Lawal is picking Vedepo apart on the mat, an as the more skilled, bigger, faster, more athletic fighter, I don't expect much resistance from Vedepo. Pound pound pound step away, allow Vedepo to move, pound pound pound. 10-8 Lawal

ROUND TWO: Half-hearted takedown attempt from Lawal as the round begins, but the defense was non-existent and Vedepo is down. Eventually gets back up. To the middle of the cage. Vedepo swings and misses. SHOULDER ROLL FTW! Vedepo tries a knee but slipped, and Lawal dives on top into guard, in the middle of the cage. Lawal stayed on top and did some damage. You know the drill. 20-17 Lawal

ROUND THREE: Lawal drops Vedepo with a strong left to the ribs. Vedepo is in massive trouble. Big lefts and rights from LAwal who is just sparring here. Vedepo dives for an ankle, misses, and flops to his back. Lawal gets on top and unloads at about 50% power until Jason Herzog gets off his ass and stops the damn fight.

WINNER: Muhammed Lawal via TKO in round 3.

STAR RATING: (*) There have been firing squads that have had lesser mismatches than this fight.

FIGHT TWO: MIKE RICHMAN VS. NAM PHAN (143 LB. CATCHWEIGHT)

- Joe Warren is in the broadcast booth. As a result, I don't think I'll be able to tolerate more than 46, maybe 47 seconds of this.

- Foreshadowing?

ROUND ONE: Rishman working the jab early. He's huge compared to Phan. Phan isn't moving his head. Gets dropped by a left. Gets back up, but Richman is unloading and it's over. Phan did what he was supposed to do.

WINNER: Mike Richman via TKO in round 1.

STAR RATING: (**) A fun squash match. We learned nothing. We knew Phan was bad, and that Richman is a very good boxer, by MMA standards I mean. Next.

FIGHT THREE: MELVIN MANHOEF VS. JOE SCHILLING (MIDDLEWEIGHT)

- Schilling is 1-3 in MMA. Manhoef is 29-11-1. And this got sanctioned. I know there's more to the story than the W/L records, of course, but it's just strange to me that this is is happening in MMA and not in Glory. Oh well. Should be fun. Not to mention violent.

ROUND ONE: Now THIS is some K-1 level striking, Joe Rogan. nice kicks from Schilling early. The speed on these strikes is jarring when compared to, well when compared to literally everyone else in the sport. Manhoef took a cup shot, and the action is paused. It was a knee from the clinch. We're back after a minute. Manhoef drops Shilling with a big right hand to the ear of Shilling and Manhoef is looking to finish. Manhoef gets side control and is trying to freaking kill Schilling. Schilling is doing a credible job of tying up Manhoef, and he's got his wits back. He's throwing really good elbows from his back, and Manhoef backs up. As Schilling tries to get back up Manhoef charges in and dives in to full guard. Not much of a guard from Schilling, but it isn't like Manhoef is trying to pass. Nice elbows once again from Schilling. Beltran almost immediately orders a standup, and almost get KO'd by Manhoef who was absolutely staying active. Whatever. Schilling is moving forward behind a pawing jab. Schilling lands a knee from the Thai plumb. 10-9 Manhoef Fun!

ROUND TWO: Schilling is backing up Manhoef without throwing a single strike. Just angles. Schilling lands a big knee, Manhoef misses a wild punch and WOW! Schilling lands a counter right and Manhoef is almost literally dead. Holy crap! TIMBER!!!!!

WINNER: Joe Schilling via murderous KO punch in round 2

STAR RATING: (***) Nothing wrong with near homicidal levels of violence.

FIGHT FOUR: MICHAEL CHANDLER VS. WILL BROOKS (LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP)

ROUND ONE: Chandler takes the middle of the cage as Brooks dances on the outside. Brooks gets too close and Chandler shoots a single leg. He doesn't get i but readjusts for a double up along the fence. Back to the single, and he gets Brooks down and gets on his back. No hooks. Chandler's awful high and yep, Brooks gets out. No harm no foul, back to the middle. Brooks is doing a good job of landing quickly and getting back out. Both guys are feeling the other out still. Brooks is doing well landing the right hand. Brooks hasn't landed anything of note, Brooks is landing his right hand and some leg kicks. Flying knee from Chandler. Hard to tell from the camera angle if it landed or not, though. 10-9 Brooks Neither guy did much. brooks did more.

ROUND TWO: Brooks is opening up a little more top open up the second stanza. Brooks got a little loose with a step knee and Chandler caught it. He presses Brooks into the cage, but Brooks is doing a good job of staying perpendicular to the mat. Chandler should let it go and throw an elbow upon retreat. Brooks has landed a couple of knees while Chandler doggedly works for a takedown that isn't there. Brooks pushes free and throws a knee for good measure. Chandler takes a kick to the cup and the referee steps in as Chandler remained on the offensive. Brooks took that one as flush as a cup shot can be taken. That just... That just can't feel good. Brooks took about a minute and they restarted. Chandler is circling but ate a side thrust kick that landed flush. Fun! Chandler looks slower than Brooks, as well as less fluid, more mechanical. Chandler gets inside after a missed kick from Brooks and he's landing some good hooks. They clinch along the cage and both guys are unloading from the clinch. Nice uppercut from Chandler and Brooks tries to circle free. Brooks plants hard and gets a takedown. As both fighters get back up Brooks gets caught in a guillotine. Brooks let it go. Looks like Chandler is busted open from his nose or upper lip. It's the nose. Chandler looks gassed from the guillotine. His hands are down and he's eating hard jabs because he can't get his hands up. 20-18 Brooks Good fight, but Brooks looks totally superior so far

ROUND THREE: Brooks to continue to work angles to find a home from leg kicks and hard jabs. Chandler grabs hold of Brooks and is working a single leg up against the fence. Brooks is showing fantastic takedown defense against the tenacious Chandler. Chandler gives it up. Chandler walks into a step knee from Brooks, but eats it and keeps on terminating forward. Brooks pushed Chandler into the cage. They spend a full minute there fighting for position before Brooks wins a good scramble and gets Chandler down and takes his back. he's too high and Chandler scoots free, and follows up by pushing Brooks into the fence. 30 seconds later and the round ends.

ROUND FOUR: Chandler walks Brooks into the cage, but doesn't do anything with it and lets Brooks circle away. Chandler lads a drop knee and immediately grabs a body lock on Brooks. The crows is getting bored. I am too. I hope this finishes in the next minute or two. Chandler misses badly as they separate. Chandler is bleeding from his right eye area. Brooks shoots a double and gets Chandler down. Chandler gives up his back, but quickly gets to his feet. Nice jabs from Brooks. They're clinched up in the middle of the cage. Chandler throws Brooks, but he pops back up like he were a Slinky. Brooks lands a right hand and Chandler turns his back and waves his hand. Brooks pounces, punches away, and Jason Herzog stops the fight? Um... What?

WINNER: Will Brooks via TKO in the fourth round.

STAR RATING: (***-) Brooks crushed it. After the throw, Brooks got to his feet and ate a big right hand. Chandler literally stopped fighting and waves both of his hands. That right hand put Chandler on queer street. His eyes were glossed over. Brooks then attacked and Chandler buried his face into the cage. He wasn't defending himself, and Herzog was absolutely right in stopping the fight. Will Brooks dominated Chandler. Chandler, at last count, was 0/8 in takedowns. Brooks was faster, smarter, and flat out better.
