BELLATOR 119: GUY VS. DUDE
MAY 9, 2014
LIVE FROM RAMA, ONT, CANADA

FIGHT ONE: RAPHAEL BUTLER (8-0) VS. NICK ROSSBOROUGH (23-8) - HEAVYWEIGHT

- Graham Bettes is the referee for this fight.

ROUND ONE: Butler gets a nice outside trip takedown along the cage. Butler postures up and works some ground and pound. Nice use of short elbows by Butler. Butler's being patient and picking his spots. Rossborough's back is up against the cage as he lays on his hip, and Butler's giving him no space as he awaits an opening. Butler gets bored and stands up. Back to the middle. Rossborough knocks Butler down with a simple left hook. Butler went down in a heap, but he isn't out. Rossborough is taking his back. Both hooks in, with two minutes to work. Make that ninety seconds, right in the middle of the cage. Make that one minute. Butler snapped his head backwards and lands a violent, intentional headbutt. Never seen that before from this position. Bettes has to take a point here. That was out of frustration. The doctor is in the cage talking to Rossborough, he is on his knees in the middle of the cage. Bettes took a point. Good for him. Rossborough wants his position back, but Bettes is making them start from standing. What a moron. He does one thing right, and then screws it up. Butler is lighting up Rossborough. And now Rossborough is firing back. This is sloppy, and awesome. The bell rings, with both fighters dazed. 10-8 Rossborough Bettes was told by Rossborough's corner that they wanted the position back upon the restart and Bettes blew them off. Unbelievable.

ROUND TWO: Butler gets Rossborough down along the cage almost immediately, just like in the first. Butler has side control this time, though. Not much action. The very rare right elbow, and that's it. Why did I volunteer for this? I didn't have to, you know. I was going to just watch the draft, but nooooooo. Jamie needed me, and I answered. I'm a fool. Oh, Butler threw one elbow from top side control in the last ninety seconds. Butler is sitting on Rossborough's head in a north-south angle, looking for an arm. Yeah, that'll happen. Butler manages to turn Rossborough away from the cage, but lost the arm in the process. Rossborough is on all fours with Butler leaning heavily on his neck, landing the occasional punch to the ribs. This is interminable. Such a horrible round. If this is supposed to get people to PAY to watch Bellator, it's having the opposite effect. Fighters are stood up with fifteen seconds left. Nothing happens to end the round. 10-9 Butler. 19-18 Rossborough Oh goodie. a possible draw and rematch.

ROUND THREE: Rossborough missed with a wild hook which spins him around like a tornado. Butler, pulling his best Helen Hunt impression goes into the tornado and gets the world's easiest takedown. Rossborouch is on all fours in the middle of the cage and grabs one of Butler's leg, but doesn't have the energy to, you know, do. Butler gets Rossborough on his back in the middle of the Miller Lite logo. Can someone explain to me why the Bears drafted Ego Ferguson in the second instead of Louis Nix III? Butler passes to side control. But to say he 'passes' incorrectly implies that it took any effort or that there was any resistance fro Rossborough. This performance from Rossborough might literally, literally I say, be the most embarrassing thing I've seen in an MMA fight since Jason Guida's fight with Mamed Khalidov. And this is a televised fight. Butler is landing one punch to the ribs of the turtled Rossborough every three seconds, and in between punches tells the ref to stop the fight. Uh... No. This is shockingly bad. This is Anthony Barr at number nine overall bad. 10-9 Butler. 28-28

- It's taking forever to calculate the scores. Michael Williams is doing the tabulations, which surprises me because I didn't know he was on the athletic commission. They came back from commercial, waited five minutes, and went back to commercial because no one can add.

WINNER: Majority Draw (28-27 Butler, 28-28 Draw)

STAR RATING AND FINAL THOUGHTS: (0) Worst fight Bellator's ever put on TV, hence the worst fight that's ever been on television. That headbutt should have been an instant DQ. Most fouls you can make the case for being unintentional. Not this one. but in case you think this is as bad as it gets, Desmond Green is yet to fight.

FIGHT TWO: MARIUS ZAROMSKIS VS. VAUGHN ANDERSON - WELTERWEIGHT

- Zaromskis hasn't fought since January 2013, and is on a two fight losing streak.

ROUND ONE: Southpaw vs. southpaw for this one. Anderson lands a loud kick to the body forty seconds in. Anderson is coming forward, Zaromskis is circling. Zaromskis is landing straight lets at will. He's fighting a very disciplined fight so far. Anderson is missing with lots of wild stuff Take that back, he dropped Zaromskis briefly with a short right hook. Zaromskis got back up quickly, but he's trying to get his feet under him. Anderson didn't pounce when he had Zaromskis dazed, and Zaromskis is fine now. Zaromskis dropped Anderson with the third punch of a three punch combo. that third punch was to the body. Zaromskis doesn't attack, but he's kicking the legs of Anderson as Anderson is on his back. Ref eventually makes Anderson stand. Nice right by Zaromskis. 10-9 Zaromskis Interesting round.

ROUND TWO: Anderson walks forward, eats a leg kick. Outside leg kick from Anderson. Big head kick from Zaromskis finds a home. Anderson will need some Advil tonight. Hard leg kick from Anderson that Zaromskis couldn't check. Zaromskis lands a kick to the middle of Anderson's balls, and we're pausing to watch replays and laugh. The referee gives Zaromskis a warning, but no point deduction. Anderson comes out aggressively, but eats a hard outside low kick. Flying knee from Zaromskis, but Anderson walked through it. Anderson iseating a lot of different types of strikes here. He is landing plenty of jabs on Zaromskis, though. Zaromskis with a flying knee that went over Anderson's head. Zaromskis is really going to the outside left leg low kick. Anderson's getting spun around every time now. Zaromski faked low and went high this time, and just missed the back of Anderson's head. Zaromskis is picking him apart now. Anderson catchs a kick and tries to take him down, but Zaromskis shook him off. Anderson eats another low kick. He tried to catch it, but couldn't do it. Zaromskis throws a rolling thunder kick after the bell that somewhat connected. 20-18 Zaromskis

ROUND THREE: Zaromskis finishes a combination with a left high kick that landed across the throat of Anderson. Thigh kick again from Zaromskis. Anderson shoots, but it was kind of ridiculous and easily stuffed. Anderson looks totally confused. Not that he's a bad fighter, but he has no idea what to do, and he can't find his range. Of course, it would help if he had two functional legs. Two more leg kicks. Anderson retreats straight to the fence, and just barely ducks a flying death-knee from Zaromskis. Zaromskis goes jab jab left leg kick. He's as demoralized as Cleveland fans after fans after getting Johnny Manziel... and losing Josh Gordon. Anderson is circling like crazy, whereas earlier int he fight he was coming forward. Zaromskis is turning it on, throwing everything in his arsenal. Not so much trying to finish, just having fun with his big bag of tricks. More outside leg kicks. Superman punch and Anderson goes down just from ducking it. The fight ends with Zaromskis ground and pound. 10-8 Zaromskis. 30-26 Zaromskis.

WINNER: Marius Zaromskis by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 30-27)

STAR RATING AND FINAL THOUGHTS: (**) Really not much to say. Glorified sparring for Zaromskis. It was neat to literally, literally I say, see the confidence drip out of Anderson's soul. OK, figuratively. There is no such thing as a soul.

FIGHT THREE: ERIC WISELY VS. JOHN ALESSIO (0-4 UFC) - 160 LB. CATCHWEIGHT

ROUND ONE: Brian Beauchamp is the third man in the cage. Alessio takes the center of the cage as Wisely bounces left and right. forty seconds in, and Wisely lands a leg kick. Alessio grabs Wisely and puts him on the cage. Double leg takedown. Full guard. Spike has taken the clock off the screen so they can run a Bellator 120 crawl promo on the bottom of the screen. Alessio is landing short strikes, and Wisely is cut open a little over his right eye. Alessio is starting to open up with a variety of strikes down there. Alessio is doing some decent damage from guard, not even thinking about passing. Not much to see here. Alessio's staying in guard, chest to chest, landing hard elbows when given some space. 10-9 Alessio

ROUND TWO: Wisely is back to his left and right dancing thing. Leg kick from Wisely. You can literally hear individual fans insulting the fighters in this fight. "GO ON AND HIT SOMEONE!" Wisely missed with a leg kick by a solid foot. I mean a solid twelve inches. misses with a head kick by a mile. Has Alessio even thrown a punch in the round? I don't think so. But he's still winning this round. Alessio isn't throwing, he's just coming forward. Wisely is circling and moving and bouncing, and missing everything by a foot and a half. This is super-fun. Front kick from Alessio finds a home. This is intolerable. Body kick from Alessio lands. Jab from Alessio lands. I'll be interested in the stats on this round. Well, no I won't really be, because that implies I'm at all interested in this fight. 20-18 Alessio Whatever.

ROUND THREE: Alessio presses Wisely into the fence and is working hard for a double leg takedown. briefly switches to a single, but it's not there. He lands the double, and pulls Wisely away from the cage in the process. Well done. Shoulder strikes from Alessio. Alessio is punching away with his left while Wisely has the right arm controlled. Alessio pulls his right arm free and promptly does not much. Alessio is passing to half-guard. Wisely's guard is so wide open that he could spin to north-south and back five times and Wisely wouldn't even notice. Two nice left hands from Alessio. Barely a minute left, and then we get to watch Desmond Green show the world how it's done! This is the worst night of fights Bellator's ever broadcast on Spike. 30-27 Alessio

WINNER: John Alessio by unanimous decision (30-27 x3)

STAR RATING AND FINAL THOUGHTS: (*-) The less said the better.

-Jimmy Smith and Bjorn Rebney sell the PPV. Bjorn Rebney is smiling, which, after sitting through this card, proves he's a vampire. Bjorn and Jimmy aren't screaming like Dana and Joe would.... Because the building is as dead as Joffrey Lannister.

FIGHT FOUR: DANIEL WEICHEL VS. DESMOND GREEN FEATHERWEIGHT TOURNAMENT FINALE

- The winner of this will officially be fourth in line for a featherweight title shot behind Straus, Pitbull, and Frodo. Assuming no random rematches for Curran, of course.

ROUND ONE: Green is doing well with his jab early. Weichel is flicking his out there, but not landing. Nice right briefly drops Green, but Green pops up immediately. Referee warns Weichel about fingers getting close to Green's eyes. Green shoots from a mile away, with predictable results. It's funny listening to Weichel's cornerman screaming instructions in harsh German. Green shoots agsin with no setup, and gets stuffed again. Green with a lunging left hand to the body. Weichel gets another reminder about the fingers. Thank God for Bellator's new gloves. Weichel shoots, and couldn't land it. Counter right hand from Weichel lands yet again. I don't think Weichel respects Green's power, like at all. Green catches a kick and drives through for a takedown. Weichel pops up immediately, but has Green on his back as they walk the fence. Knees to the thigh from Green. This is one of the few times when you could assurately say Takedown Steals The Round. 10-9 Green

ROUND TWO: Jimmy Smith gave the first to Weichel, which is fine. Weichel lands a hard counter right and drops Green with a left hook. Weichel jumps on Green, but did so poorly as Green grabbed a leg and worked his wrestling to neuter Weichel. Weichel worked free, and we're back to standing. Another irght hand for Weichel, and Green's hurt again. Green grabs a leg, and Weichel is working on top of Green. If Green lets go of that leg, Weichel will have Green's back. Green's on all fours with Weichel on top. He's got the rear naked choke, and Green chokes. Nice performance by Weichel, who stands zero chance against Curran, Straus, Pitbull, or Frodo.

WINNER: Daniel weichel by submission (rear naked choke) at 2:07 of round two.

STAR RATING AND FINAL THOUGHTS: (**) It was fine. Once Weichel realized that Green couldn't hurt him, Weichel was willing to eat two to land one. Green has to develop punching power.

- That's it. Bellator leads into their first PPV with the worst show of the year. Good timing there. We'll be providing live play by play next Saturday night.
