Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez kept his Bellator record unblemished on Thursday night at Bellator 33, scoring a hard fought victory over Roger Huerta at the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Penn.
Alvarez bruised and battered Huerta throughout two rounds of the fight, closing up Huerta's left eye from an accumulation of strikes. The swelling caused the doctor's to stop the fight following the second round, giving Alvarez the victory in the non-title fight.
Huerta was competitive, however, and resilient, knocking Alvarez down with a well placed strike late in the first round and scoring a takedown in the second round, but ultimately he came up short in his biggest fight outside of the UFC.
In other action on the card, Ben Askren out-wrestled Bellator Welterweight Champion Lyman Good to capture his first MMA Championship.
The five round bout saw Askren continually score takedowns and improve his position, garnering the mount on multiple occasions and staying relentless in his pursuit. The win moved him to a perfect 7-0 while handing Good his first career loss.
The opening bout of the card saw Rick Hawn score a TKO victory over Levon Maynard after a great throw followed by a series of punches on the ground. The win was Hawn's ninth straight to kick off his career, and his seventh by TKO.
