Melvin Guillard will be undergoing surgery this week after badly breaking his hand in his Bellator debut loss to Brandon Girtz.
Bellator MMA President Scott Coker said on Monday that Guillard will be getting surgery this week, and commented on Friday's Bellator 141 main event in an interview with MMAJunkie.com.
"He's going to go to the doctor today and maybe have surgery today or tomorrow," Coker said. "I wish him a speedy recovery.
"It was a fight that was interesting, and he almost pulled it out at the end. It didn't work out, but man, it was really close... When he started throwing those knees and unloading on [Girtz], I didn't realize his hands were broken. But he told me, 'I just let my hands go. I knew my hands were broke, but I just let it go. But I could only do it two or three times and knew I was in pretty big trouble.' I think that was ultimately what cost him the fight."
Penick's Analysis: Again, what really cost him the fight was getting taken down multiple times before the hand actually broke. He got cracked early in the first by a big strike and then Girtz immediately shot and took him down. That set the tone for the rest of the fight, and though the hand break didn't help things, things were already going poorly for him. He'll get another shot in Bellator because of that injury factor, but that was a poor performance before the injury came into play.
