Melvin Guillard's Bellator debut didn't quite go to plan on Friday night, as he was taken down continuously by Brandon Girtz, ultimately losing a decision at Bellator 141.
To add injury to the poor performance, Guillard apparently suffered a significant hand injury in the fight as well. One of his coaches at American Top Team, Din Thomas, posted a picture of the aftermath to Instagram, and said in a brief comment to MMAJunkie.com that Guillard "shattered his hand" early in the second round.
Despite the injury, Guillard managed one late rush of strikes in the third round that had Girtz a bit on the ropes, but he couldn't finish it off and lost the decision.
Penick's Analysis: That's some nasty swelling there. Unfortunate injury for Guillard, but that wasn't what cost him the fight. He got cracked immediately before getting taken down, and put very little effort into getting back to his feet throughout that fight. He had his late rush after the break, but the takedowns began well before then, and he got beat to the punch early as well.
