One week after record ratings for the organization on Spike, Bellator MMA came back down to earth a bit with Friday's Bellator 139 broadcast.
While the previous week's Bellator 138 event - headlined by Kimbo Slice vs. Ken Shamrock - drew over two million average viewers, Friday's Cheick Kongo vs. Alexander Volkov card brought in 764,000 average viewers, according to a report from SportsTVRatings.com.
However, that represented the most viewers for a live sports program on cable TV Friday night. The only sports programming to beat it Friday was an episode that evening of Pardon the Interruption on ESPN.
Penick's Analysis: Given the (rightful) level of promotion for their "tentpole" event the week before, this card was obviously going to suffer in promotion as a result, and it dropped to what has been around Bellator's base viewership for a regular event. That's not really a surprise at all, because it's been the case for most of their in between cards, and will continue to be as they differentiate between these types of events and the "tentpole" events.
DON'T GO YET... WE SUGGEST THESE MMATORCH ARTICLES, TOO!
