Pat Curran's last fight saw him regain the Bellator Featherweight Championship in a rubber match against Daniel Straus, and on Friday night, Curran meets Patricio "Pitbull" Freire for a second time.
The string of rematches isn't an issue for Curran, though, and he doesn't think it's going to end with Friday's second bout with Freire.
"A fourth fight usually doesn't happen much in this sport, but that's just where we're at," Curran said in an interview with MMAJunkie.com. "Bellator is going to bring in a lot of new talent, but as of right now, my thought is 'Pitbull' and Straus. You're definitely going to see a lot of rematches with those two.
"We have a lot of good guys and a lot of good up-and-comers, but right now I see them as the two kingpins."
Curran was asked about his thoughts on the new approach to fight booking in the organization with Scott Coker coming on board, and he's positive about the changes, even if it means less film on potential challengers without tournaments in play.
"We're putting on the best matchups," Curran commented. "The one downfall I see as a champion is sitting on top, you won't really be able to see the tournament unfolding like they did and watch these guys come through the rankings, where their strengths and weaknesses are."
"But at the same time, I'm kind of glad that the tournaments are done, because I never plan on losing, but it does happen, and I don't want to go through another tournament. It's a lot of wear and tear on the body, and injuries happen a lot."
Penick's Analysis: It's likely we'll see Curran, Straus, and Pitbull involved in a lot of fights with one another, simply because they're above the rest of the pack at 145 lbs. in Bellator. They've also all been competitive with one another, so it's entirely possible each of them scores a win over the other during matchups in the foreseeable future. Given how entertaining most of the fights in that run have been so far, that should be just fine by Bellator.
