It's going to take some time for now former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal to climb back up the ladder, as Sherdog.com reports that the former NCAA D-1 wrestling champion will undergo knee surgery to replace both the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee.

The injury will keep him out of action for at least nine months, according to his manager Ryan Parsons.

Lawal was knocked out by Rafael "Feijao" Cavalcante last Saturday night at Strikeforce: Houston in the third round. The injury occurred at some point during the fight, and Lawal will have surgery next Tuesday.

Lawal has had ACL surgery before, most recently after tearing it in March of 2009 in a Sengoku bout against Ryo Kawamura.

Penick's Analysis: This is not good news for Lawal. It's something they wanted to take care of before it got worse, but at the same time knee injuries have proven to be the bane of many wrestler's existence in MMA. Lawal is already 29 years old, and his continued progression in the sport could be stifled by lengthy injuries like this, especially to his knees. If his shot gets affected by bad knees it takes away one of his biggest weapons. Hopefully he recovers well and gets back to the drawing board and learns from his loss to Feijao.
