Bobby Lashley's next opponent is set, as MMAJunkie.com reports that he will meet 8-1 heavyweight Chad Griggs on next month's "Strikeforce: Houston" card on Showtime.
The former WWE superstar has been out of action since January, where he defeated Wes Sims in the first round. He is 5-0 in his professional career since making the move to MMA.
He continued to appear in pro wrestling organization TNA on Spike TV for a time before making the move to Strikeforce and MMA full time. Lashley had been tentatively scheduled for a couple of events before finally getting officially booked for this August 21 card from the Toyota Center.
Griggs has not competed since April of 2009, and this will be only his second fight since November of 2007. Griggs owns stoppages in all eight of his victories, and has sole loss came over three years ago in April of 2007.
The August 21 event will air live on Showtime and will be headlined by two title bouts in the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions.
Penick's Analysis: This is a fine bout for Lashley after an extended layoff, and considering the slow path he's tried to take with his career thus far it's a fight you'd imagine him taking. Griggs isn't a bad fighter, but having fought just once in nearly three years isn't going to do him any favors in this fight. He's likely to have ring rust be a major factor in the fight, but he'll still be a tough veteran challenger for Lashley. If Lashley is impressive in this one, he'll need to be booked against a more formidable opponent the next time out.
