Former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza is one of the fighters in the organization who many believe could be a legitimate challenger in the UFC as well. He went a long way towards proving that on Saturday night, taking out longtime UFC veteran Ed Herman, who was on loan from the UFC for the final Strikeforce event.
Souza dominated from the outset, keeping the pressure on Herman with a crisp striking attack, and keeping him uncomfortable on the feet and in the clinch. Souza then scored a nice takedown after Herman threw a punch, and was getting to work when he got hit by an illegal upkick.
The referee reacted only after Souza said something, and in a spot of bad officiating stood them up, gave Herman a warning without taking a point, and restarted the fight on the feet.
Souza didn't seem happy with that, and he landed another flurry of strikes before scoring another big takedown. This time, he locked on a kimura, stepped over, wrenched the hold, and forced the quick tap. It was an extremely impressive win from Souza, and against a fighter who had won three out of his last four UFC bouts, it should put him in a good spot when they bring him over this year.
