MMA NEWS: Another city bans MMA from every place in the city - public or private

Today's Coon Rapid Herald in Coon Rapid, Minn. reports that all forms of mixed martial arts has been banned in every place in the city - public or private. It's an identical policy as passed by the nearby Blaine, Minn. last August.

The Blaine ban was instituted in reaction to high school students drawing a crowd of 100 to watch fights in a park. Police weren't able to cite the students because there was no law on the books at the time.

This news breaks the same day that Minnesota was named as the host city for August's UFC PPV headlined likely by Brock Lesnar vs. Mark Coleman.

Several Minnesota cities since 2005 have banned MMA fights, including in bars, due to incidents among fans outside of the bar afterward.

KELLER ANALYSIS: MMA is new enough that it's not unexpected that city councils will overreact and not differentiate between trained professions part of an organized sport and kids imitating them in backyards in parks (or in bars). This is going to be a reality for the sport of MMA for at least another ten years until the generation that grew up seeing it as a legit sport and not, as Sen. McCain put it in the mid-'90s, "human cock-fighting," end up taking over city council seats and see the sport for what it is. As long as the big cities with major arenas don't ban MMA, UFC shouldn't be affected, although it's never good publicity as the major Minnesota papers may end up citing how many individual cities ban MMA as a way to make it seem like UFC is controversial and more dangerous than football (at all levels), karate tournaments, and boxing (at all levels).
